Brown Bears Dominate but Settle for Draw Against Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown did almost everything but win.

Dominant in territory, ruthless in shot volume, and in control for long stretches, the Bears walked out of the URI Soccer Complex on Thursday night with only a 1–1 draw against Rhode Island, a result that felt far leaner than the performance behind it.

Vargas Strikes Early

The breakthrough came quickly, and it came from a familiar source.

In the 12th minute, with Brown already pinning the Rams deep, junior Kyra Treanor broke her defender down the right flank and slipped into space. She drove a low ball across the six-yard box, where senior forward Angelina Vargas had timed her run perfectly. One touch, high conviction, and the ball was in the back of the net.

Vargas’ finish marked her third goal of the season and the sixth of her career. Treanor collected her second assist of the year, the third of her Brown tenure.

The goal reflected the tone of the opening half. Brown swarmed. Rhode Island chased.

By halftime, the numbers painted a lopsided picture: 11–1 in shots, 7–1 in shots on goal, 5–2 in corner kicks, all in Brown’s favor. Vargas led the first-half surge with four shots and three on target. Senior forward Joy Okonye added three efforts, testing the keeper twice.

The pressure did not come in isolated waves. It was constant.

Vargas forced another save in the 14th minute. Okonye followed in the 25th. Senior Corine Gregory got in on the act a minute later. In the 33rd minute, sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy drove a shot on frame. Each time, Rhode Island bent but did not break.

Rams Hit Back

Brown’s control extended into the second half, but the game never found a second goal for the visitors. That left Rhode Island just one moment away from flipping the story.

It arrived in the 68th minute.

Against the run of play, the Rams worked the ball into the penalty area, where Megan Steinbach pounced. From inside the box, she found the finish that Brown had been searching for at the other end, pulling the hosts level at 1–1 with one of only two shots on goal they would manage all night.

The equalizer jolted the match. For the first time, Brown’s back line had to absorb real pressure.

Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle had been largely untroubled to that point, organizing calmly and playing all 90 minutes as a unit. Behind them, sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter had only one save to make in the draw, a testament to Brown’s defensive control as much as Rhode Island’s limited attacking threat.

Yet the Rams almost stole it late. In the 83rd minute, a long-range effort crashed off the crossbar, a sharp reminder that dominance in the stat sheet guarantees nothing on the scoreboard.

Late Push, No Winner

The scare seemed to snap Brown back into its earlier rhythm.

The Bears poured forward again in the final minutes, hunting a winner that would have matched the performance. They earned corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes, stacking set-piece pressure in front of the home crowd. Each delivery carried danger; none produced the decisive touch.

In stoppage time, Guy carved out one last look. Her shot in the 90th minute forced a final save, the Rams hanging on as Brown’s 17–3 advantage in total shots and 10–2 edge in shots on goal went unrewarded on the scoreboard.

Okonye finished with game highs in both shots (six) and shots on goal (four). Vargas and Guy each took four shots, combining for five on target. The volume told one story. The result told another.

Even so, Brown extended its unbeaten run to three matches (2–0–1) and stayed perfect within state lines. The Bears are now 4–0–1 in games played in Rhode Island, including a 4–0–0 mark at home, and sit at 4–2–1 overall. Rhode Island moved to 2–3–3.

Next up, Brown heads back on the road for its final non-league away test of the season, a Sunday trip to Hofstra on Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. One question will follow them onto the plane: can a team this dominant in the details start turning control into ruthless, regular wins?
