Bardghji Faces Second ACL Tear as Transfer Plans Collapse
The plan was simple. One more good pre-season, a move before September 1, and a fresh start away from Barcelona. Instead, Roony Bardghji is facing another long, lonely road back.
Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a devastating injury suffered in training on Monday. Medical tests have ruled out any hope of a quick fix; surgery is scheduled in the coming days, and with it months on the sidelines.
For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be crueller.
From transfer talks to treatment room
The Sweden international had been preparing for a summer exit after clear talks with coach Hansi Flick. According to ESPN, Flick told the winger that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to come by this season, urging him to look for a new club.
Barcelona acted accordingly. With interest arriving from across Europe, including the Premier League, the club had already started fielding enquiries and expected negotiations to pick up pace as the window moved towards its final weeks.
To reduce the risk of injury before a transfer, Bardghji was even left out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The caution made sense. The logic was sound.
Then came Monday’s training session, and everything collapsed.
The ACL tear in his right knee has not only ended any chance of a move before the September 1 deadline, it has frozen his career at a moment when it was supposed to open up.
A brutal repeat
This is not a new nightmare for Bardghji. It is a sequel.
The winger has now torn the ACL in his right knee for the second time, having suffered the same serious injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024. Barcelona signed him last summer for around €2 million, gambling that his talent would outlast the medical file.
In his debut season in Spain, he made 28 appearances across all competitions and scored twice. The raw numbers look respectable for a young arrival, but the detail tells a different story: most of those minutes came from the bench, his role more cameo than central.
This summer, the path to the starting XI narrowed even further. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi pushed Bardghji down the pecking order, turning a difficult battle for minutes into something close to impossible. A transfer was not just an option; it was the logical next step.
Now that door has slammed shut.
Season lost, future on hold
With the window closing on September 1, Barcelona know there is no realistic prospect of moving Bardghji on while he recovers from such a serious injury. His short-term future is set: surgery, rehabilitation, and a season spent working in the shadows at the training ground rather than chasing a new opportunity elsewhere.
He will remain in Barcelona for the long haul, focusing entirely on his recovery and the challenge of overcoming a second major knee injury before his 21st birthday.
For a club juggling squad planning and a packed attacking line, this is an unwelcome complication. For Bardghji, it is something harsher: a year that was meant to redefine his career has instead been reduced to a fight just to get it back on track.
The next move will not be a transfer. It will be a comeback.
