Barcelona’s World Cup 2026: Standouts and Setbacks
Barcelona's Mixed Fortunes at World Cup 2026
After five intense weeks, the curtain has fallen on World Cup 2026, with Spain claiming their second-ever world title. Barcelona saw 16 players participate across various national teams, experiencing both highs and lows.
Disappointments for Some
Ronald Araujo faced a tough break. Injured before the tournament, he didn't get any game time for Uruguay. This marks the second consecutive World Cup he missed due to injury. Uruguay, under Marcelo Bielsa, failed to advance beyond the group stage, with a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde standing out as a particularly humbling moment.
The Netherlands also faltered unexpectedly, exiting in the Round of 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco. Their strong squad was expected to go further, but injuries played a part. Notably, Frenkie de Jong battled a knee issue throughout the tournament, which Barcelona's medical team now needs to address. His potential absence at the start of the league season is a concern for the club.
Raphinha's World Cup was cut short by a recurring hamstring injury. After completing 90 minutes against Morocco, he managed only 39 minutes against Haiti before being sidelined. Though he seems to be recovering, Barcelona will likely proceed cautiously with the speedy winger.
Bright Spots for Barcelona’s Spanish Stars
There was plenty to celebrate among the Spanish players. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal all brought home winners' medals after defeating Argentina. Ferran’s decisive goal in the final could boost his confidence significantly. Pau Cubarsi earned the Young Player of the Tournament award, a well-deserved recognition.
Lamine Yamal performed as expected, while the fact all eight Spanish players remain healthy and rested bodes well for Barcelona’s upcoming season.
Promising Performances Elsewhere
Anthony Gordon showed what he can bring to Barcelona despite England's disappointment. Expected to compete with Raphinha and fill Marcus Rashford’s shoes, Gordon impressed with consistent effort, scoring once and assisting three times. Even though England couldn’t capitalize on his semi-final goal, Gordon’s personal form was encouraging.
Hamza Abdelkarim, an 18-year-old Egyptian talent, made brief but notable appearances. Playing 15 minutes in four matches, he demonstrated potential despite Egypt’s early exit. The experience gained should help him adapt and grow at Barcelona.
