Barcelona's International Break: Flick's Challenge with Six Players

Barcelona head into an unusually long international break with a spring in their step and a skeleton squad on the training pitch.

Fresh from a 3-1 win over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, Hansi Flick’s team have closed this phase of the season on a high, but the coach now faces a very different kind of challenge: keeping rhythm and intensity with barely half a team to work with.

Flick’s six-man group

The plan is set. The reality is stark.

According to SPORT, Flick will have just six senior players at his disposal during this extended pause: Gavi, Gerard Martin, Alejandro Balde, Gabriel Jesus, Brian Farinas and Wojciech Szczesny.

That list does not include the injured trio Joan Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Frenkie de Jong. All three will stay at the Ciutat Esportiva to continue their recovery programmes, working away from the spotlight while the rest of the dressing room scatters across the globe.

For Flick, it means a stripped-back fortnight. Tactical ideas, fitness work, individual focus — all of it condensed into a small, tight group before the full squad drifts back from international duty.

Four sessions, then silence

Barcelona will be on the grass from Tuesday to Friday, four sessions to keep the legs moving and the ideas flowing.

Then everything stops.

From 28 September until 4 October, the remaining players will be given a full week off. Training is scheduled to resume on 5 October, by which time the internationals will begin to filter back and the season will crank up again.

It’s a strange rhythm for a club used to relentless competition: a burst of work with six first-teamers, a week of quiet, then straight back into the grind.

Gavi refuses to switch off

Monday was officially a rest day. The squad stayed away. Flick himself didn’t even go to the training ground.

Gavi did.

The midfielder turned up to train voluntarily, pushing through a session on his own terms while the rest of the group enjoyed a rare day off. Joan Garcia and Christensen were also present, continuing their rehabilitation as they edge back towards full fitness.

Fermin Lopez made only a brief appearance, dropping in to collect some belongings before heading out again. The collective work starts again on Tuesday, but Gavi has already set the tone for what Flick will expect when the full group returns.

Raphinha’s very different “break”

While those left in Catalonia can breathe out and reset, Raphinha is heading into the most intense spell of his season so far.

He joins Brazil at the best moment of his career, fresh from a hat-trick against Sevilla that has taken him to the top of the La Liga scoring charts. Confidence high, goals flowing, his calendar is about to fill up.

Brazil will play two matches in Australia, then fly on to India for another friendly. Raphinha will travel almost halfway around the world and back before he sees Barcelona again.

By the time he returns to the Ciutat Esportiva, the break will be over, the miles will be in his legs, and an already outstanding season for the winger will be staring at its next test.
