Barcelona's Bid for Rodri Rejected by Manchester City

Barcelona have tested Manchester City’s resolve for Rodri – and been firmly knocked back.

An opening bid worth £38.5m has been rejected by the Premier League champions, who are prepared to cash in on the midfielder but only at their price. That figure sits north of £60m, a clear statement that even with one year left on his contract, City still value the 30-year-old as one of the most influential players in world football.

Rodri is heading into the final 12 months of his deal at Etihad Stadium and has not agreed fresh terms. Uncertainty has swirled around his future all summer. For a long stretch, the smart money had him bound for Real Madrid. Not anymore.

Barca Move to the Front of the Queue

Barcelona have surged to the front of the race after receiving the player’s approval to open talks with City, with sources telling BBC Sport that green light arrived on Thursday. The Catalan club then lodged their first formal offer on Friday.

Inside the Camp Nou corridors, there had been caution. Club sources initially suggested there were no guarantees a deal could be done, a nod to both their financial constraints and City’s bargaining power. Yet the picture is shifting. Negotiations are active, the bid has gone in, and the tone from Barcelona now reflects a situation that is very much alive.

On the other side of Spain, the door has quietly closed. BBC sources say talks with Real Madrid have ended, clearing the path for Barcelona to pursue Rodri without their fiercest rivals lurking in the background.

A Champion’s Body Under Strain

Rodri’s recent club seasons have not been straightforward. He missed much of the 2024-25 campaign with a serious knee injury, and the previous year was punctured by hamstring problems. For most players, that sort of medical file would send warning flares through any recruitment department.

Then came the World Cup.

The Spain midfielder roared back to his peak on the biggest stage, driving his country to a second world title and collecting the player of the tournament award along the way. He later added the 2024 Ballon d'Or to his haul, confirmation of his status as the game’s outstanding midfielder when fit.

Right now, he is again in recovery mode. Rodri underwent back surgery last month and remains sidelined, with plans to rejoin his City team-mates in Manchester early next week. Any buying club will factor that into their timeline. City will as well, as they weigh up how quickly they can move in the market if they sanction a sale.

City’s Clock Is Ticking

The calendar adds its own pressure. As the transfer window edges into its second week of August, City know they cannot let Rodri’s situation drift. Lose him late in the window and even their vast resources might not secure a like-for-like replacement in time.

Work has already started on that front. Talks are ongoing with Lille over 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, a player viewed as a long-term project rather than a ready-made Rodri clone. Lille’s stance is uncompromising: an £86m asking price that currently stands as a major obstacle.

So City sit at a crossroads. Barcelona have made their move, Real Madrid are out of the picture, and Rodri’s contract keeps ticking down. Do the champions cash in on a Ballon d'Or winner now and accelerate a midfield rebuild, or dig in and risk losing one of their modern pillars for far less – or for nothing – a year from now?
