Balraj Landa has traded the familiar rhythms of the English game for the chaos and colour of Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every bit of it.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, released by AFC Bournemouth in February, has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League season, plotting a fresh start almost 6,000 miles from home. The move comes after short spells in non-league football with Salisbury City and Dorchester Town, a sharp drop from the Premier League environment he had known but one that kept him in the shop window.

The turning point arrived with a message from a familiar name. Former Fulham defender and ex-Southern player-manager Zesh Rehman flagged up the opportunity, and from there Landa barely hesitated.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. “My first thought was, ‘What an opportunity to get’.”

For a player still carving out his identity in the senior game, the appeal was obvious. Regular minutes, a top-flight league, and a new audience.

“It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” Landa explained. “On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”

That last line tells you as much about the move as any tactical briefing. This is career development and life experiment rolled into one.

Landa arrives with a clear on-field profile. A two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, he grew up in the academy system, first spotted by Southampton at just eight years old. Those early years on the south coast taught him the value of touch, vision and versatility – qualities he will now try to impose in a very different football culture.
