Youri Tielemans Apologizes to Aston Villa Fans After Controversial Comments

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to calm a storm of his own making, apologising to Aston Villa supporters after describing Manchester United as a “bigger club” than his former side.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, joined United this summer on a five-year deal after the Old Trafford club activated a £35m release clause in his Villa contract. His departure ended a three-year spell at Villa Park that began with his move from Leicester City in 2023, during which he made 134 appearances and scored 10 goals.

The controversy flared during United’s pre-season tour. Tielemans initially paid tribute to his old club, crediting Villa with helping him rediscover his level.

He said Villa had put him “back to my best level” – but then came the line that angered a section of the fanbase: “But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

The reaction from some Villa supporters was swift and hostile, accusing the midfielder of disrespecting a club that had rebuilt his reputation and given him a central role over three seasons.

Tielemans responded on Thursday, using Instagram to address the backlash and soften the impact of his remarks.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

It leaves Tielemans starting life at Old Trafford with an early reminder of how closely every word is scrutinised at the top of the Premier League – and how quickly a farewell can turn from warm to fraught.
