Aurélien Tchouaméni's Measured Return to Real Madrid
José Mourinho has a plan, and Aurélien Tchouaméni is right at the heart of it.
The French midfielder, long sidelined by a complicated thigh injury, is being eased back into Real Madrid’s engine room step by step, minute by minute, with nothing left to chance.
A return measured in minutes
First came 11 minutes against Inter Milan in the Champions League a week ago. Then 21 minutes against Rayo Vallecano three days later. Small doses, carefully controlled, but enough to remind everyone what Real have been missing.
Spanish newspaper AS reports that Tchouaméni will not start Tuesday’s league match against Elche. That doesn’t mean he’ll be a mere spectator. The expectation is that he will play more than half an hour, another deliberate increase in workload as Mourinho sticks to the roadmap.
Mourinho didn’t hide his intentions before the game.
“He will get more minutes on the pitch, without doubt. He keeps improving, becoming stronger and more confident. He will certainly play, but I will not specify the number of minutes he will play,” the Real Madrid manager said.
The message is clear: Real want him back, but they want him back right.
Repairing a weak spot
Inside the club, the coaching staff are watching him closely. They see more than a returning player; they see a solution.
This Real Madrid side has shown vulnerability on the edge of the penalty area, an area where attacks have too often been allowed to develop. Tchouaméni’s discipline, reading of the game and defensive control are viewed as a crucial shield in front of the back line, a piece that could rebalance the whole team.
That is why the club refuses to rush. His comeback is not a race. It is a calculated progression.
He continues to follow his treatment plan with patience. Slowly, steadily, each new step is only taken once the previous one has been fully absorbed. Avoiding a relapse is the absolute priority. Full fitness, not a quick fix, is the target.
Long days, quiet work
Behind the scenes, the workload has been relentless. AS details long hours in the gym, extended physiotherapy sessions and cautious, individual drills on pitch number 3 at the training complex.
No shortcuts. No heroics. Just repetition and control.
Tchouaméni has reportedly been pain-free for several weeks. Physically, the signs are encouraging. Mentally, there is still a trace of anxiety, understandable after such a complicated layoff, but he is trying to stay calm and trust the process.
The staff track every minute he plays. They adjust, add a little more, then wait for the body’s response. Given how the injury unfolded, they have every reason to be meticulous.
It began 73 days ago, just before the World Cup round-of-16 match against Paraguay, when he first felt pain in his thigh. He chose to push on and later featured against Spain in the semi-final, a gamble that backfired. He left the tournament injured, spent his holiday in physiotherapy instead of rest, and missed the start of La Liga.
Real Madrid do not want to relive that scenario.
Eyes on the derby
All of this careful preparation is building towards one date circled in red: the Madrid derby.
If the plan continues without setbacks, Tchouaméni has a strong chance of starting against Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano next Sunday. A fierce rival, a hostile stadium, and a match where control in midfield often decides everything.
Mourinho’s plan is simple: get him there fit, confident and ready to close the spaces that have hurt Real all season.
The minutes against Elche are just another step. The real test may arrive under the floodlights, in a derby that could say a lot about where Real Madrid’s season is heading – and how central Aurélien Tchouaméni will be to it.
