Atletico Madrid Files FIFA Complaint Against Barcelona Over Alvarez

The cold war between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona has turned into open conflict. Atletico are preparing a formal complaint to FIFA, accusing Barça of illegally approaching their star forward Julian Alvarez, and the language coming out of the Metropolitano leaves little room for diplomacy.

Alvarez, signed from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for around £81.8 million on a deal running to 2030, is not just any player for Atletico. He is the club’s record signing, the symbol of a new project, and the man who helped knock Barcelona out of both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey last season. Now he sits at the centre of a storm that cuts to the heart of how business is done at the top of European football.

Gil Marin Draws a Line

Speaking to EFE, Atletico CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marin did not bother with coded messages or veiled threats. He laid out the club’s stance in stark terms.

“Our responsibility is to defend the interests of Atletico Madrid, and that is why we are going to file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with a player who had a valid contract during the protected period,” he said.

The “protected period” is crucial here. Under FIFA rules, clubs are forbidden from approaching players under long-term contracts during that window without permission from their current employers. Atletico are adamant Barcelona have crossed that line with Alvarez, who remains tied to the club for another four years.

From their perspective, this is not a transfer saga. It is a matter of principle.

Alvarez Speaks, Atletico Bristle

The anger in Madrid is not reserved solely for Barcelona. Alvarez himself has walked straight into the eye of the storm.

On international duty with Argentina after their 2-0 World Cup win over Austria on Monday, the striker chose his moment – and, in Atletico’s view, chose it badly. Speaking to ESPN, he admitted he wanted out.

“I don't think it's the right moment to talk, but I also don't want to hide. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at [Atlético] who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” Alvarez said.

Honesty, yes. Diplomacy, no. Those words cut through Atletico’s dressing room and boardroom alike.

Gil Marin did not hide his disappointment.

“I deeply regret his comments. It wasn’t the right day to make those statements - it was Messi’s day and the Argentine national team’s day, not Julian’s,” he said.

The message was clear: Atletico feel the player has stepped out of line, hijacking a national celebration to push his own agenda. Yet despite the sting of those remarks, Gil Marin insisted the club’s position remains immovable.

“Julian has a dream, and we at Atletico have dreams too. It’s true that he’s spoken with us, but it’s also true that he’s fully aware of our position because we’ve been very clear. Atletico doesn’t want to transfer his rights. He’s a great player, and we’re very proud that he plays for us.”

The player wants a transfer. The club refuses to sell. Barcelona lurk in the background. The tension is obvious.

Barcelona in the Firing Line

If Alvarez’s words hurt, Barcelona’s actions have enraged. Gil Marin’s criticism of the Catalan club went beyond a simple complaint over tapping up. He questioned their credibility, their methods, and even their honesty with their own supporters.

“Barcelona is disrespecting us; they think they can walk all over us, that we’re weak or stupid,” he said. “But what they’re actually showing the world is a way of acting that defines them. They’re lying to us, to the player, to the media, and they’re also lying to their own fans. They’re trying to make everyone believe they can take on a deal they’re actually not capable of handling.”

It was a full-frontal attack. Not just on the legality of Barça’s approach, but on the financial reality behind it. Gil Marin painted a picture of a club talking big in public while, in Atletico’s view, lacking the means to complete such a transfer.

The bitterness is sharpened by recent history on the pitch. Alvarez enjoyed a superb 2025-26 campaign, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists for Atletico. Among those were decisive strikes that knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League quarter-finals and the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Now the club he helped eliminate are trying to lure him away. In Madrid, that does not feel like coincidence. It feels like provocation.

A Pattern, Not an Isolated Case

For Atletico, this is not a one-off. Gil Marin framed the Alvarez saga as part of a broader pattern of behaviour from the hierarchy at the Spotify Camp Nou.

“This isn’t the first time Barcelona has acted this way, and the soccer world is well aware of it. Last year, they did something very similar with Nico Williams and Athletic Club,” he said.

The reference to Nico Williams is telling. Athletic Club, like Atletico, pride themselves on their identity and their ability to hold firm in the market. To be bracketed with them is no accident. Gil Marin is positioning Atletico as another club prepared to stand up to Barcelona’s methods, and this time he is taking the fight to FIFA.

The coming weeks will test every relationship in this triangle. Atletico have nailed their colours to the mast and are ready to escalate. Barcelona, already under scrutiny for their finances and transfer strategy, now face a formal complaint on top of the usual political noise. And Alvarez, the man at the centre of it all, must return to a club that insists it will not sell him, while his dream points elsewhere.

For La Liga, and for the balance of power in Spain, the question is no longer whether this row will leave scars. It is how deep they will run.
