Atlético Madrid Sets Deadline for Alvarez, Closes Door on Barcelona

Atlético Madrid have put a clock on the Julian Alvarez saga – and slammed the door in Barcelona’s face.

The club have set a deadline of Friday for a decision on the Argentina forward’s future, with chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín making it crystal clear Alvarez will “never, ever” be sold to Barça. Atlético’s stance is absolute on that front, but not on a sale in general. A move elsewhere before the window shuts remains on the table.

Arsenal are watching closely. Alvarez, 26, is the Gunners’ top attacking target and they are monitoring the situation in case an opportunity opens up for a late move.

Tension has been rising in Madrid. Alvarez has now missed training for two straight days, after being told there is a “zero per cent chance” he joins Barcelona despite the player’s preference for the Camp Nou. He was booed by sections of the home crowd during a substitute appearance in Atlético’s draw with Villarreal on Sunday and then missed a midweek game, officially due to “illness”.

Earlier this week, Atlético’s board of directors released a strongly worded statement backing the club’s refusal to negotiate with Barcelona.

“The members of Atlético de Madrid’s Board of Directors have unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club’s decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julián Alvarez to FC Barcelona,” it read.

“Atlético de Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner. We fully stand behind the club’s previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation and there is zero consideration of an Alvarez transfer to Barcelona.

“Atlético de Madrid trust that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done during the two seasons he has been defending our colours.”

The deadline is designed to give Atlético enough time to move for a replacement if Alvarez does leave. Arsenal, waiting in the wings, now know exactly how long they have to make their move.

Liverpool close in on Barcola as Gakpo future hangs

On Merseyside, Liverpool have pushed hard into the market and are closing on a major attacking signing.

The club have agreed a £100m fee with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, with a further £20m in potential add-ons after PSG softened their initial demands for the 23-year-old forward. Barcola is one of three signings Andoni Iraola wants before the window shuts, including two wide players.

Liverpool are also pursuing Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace. An opening offer of around £50m has been rejected, but Liverpool are not walking away from the deal and remain keen to bring the winger to Anfield after abandoning a move for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh due to resistance from the south-coast club.

The knock-on effect is clear. If Liverpool land their forward targets, Cody Gakpo could yet be sacrificed before Tuesday’s deadline. Tottenham are pushing hardest, with Roberto De Zerbi insistent that Spurs keep up their pursuit of the Dutchman despite a summer spend already beyond £300m. Manchester City are also admirers.

Asked directly about Gakpo’s future, Iraola refused to offer any guarantees. “When the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone,” he said. Until the window closes, Gakpo’s position remains in play.

Harvey Elliott’s situation is also unresolved. After a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa last season, he has returned to Liverpool but is attracting interest from Serie A. Lazio and Napoli are both said to be keen on the midfielder as the final week of the window plays out.

Chelsea ready to cash in on Enzo as Martinez deal agreed

Across London, Chelsea are braced for a major midfield decision of their own.

The club are prepared to sell Enzo Fernandez for the right price amid firm interest from Manchester City. No formal talks have taken place yet, but Chelsea will only sanction a sale if they can reinvest to strengthen Mauricio Pochettino’s squad before the deadline.

Fernandez’s omission from the squad for Thursday night’s Carabao Cup win over Luton Town only fuelled the speculation. Chelsea are already lining up options in case the World Cup winner departs, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott a player they could return to if City come in with a serious offer.

One deal is already in place. Chelsea have agreed a £7.5m fee with Aston Villa to sign goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The move follows a couple of costly errors from Robert Sanchez in Monday’s 3-2 victory at Fulham, accelerating the club’s push for a new No 1.

Reiss Nelson ends 18-year Arsenal stay

At Arsenal, one long story has reached its conclusion.

Reiss Nelson has left the club after his contract was mutually terminated, allowing him to become a free agent. It brings an 18-year association with Arsenal to an end.

A club statement underlined his journey: Nelson made 90 first-team appearances, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists. He lifted the FA Cup in 2020 and contributed to Community Shield wins in 2017 and 2020, after coming through the academy and signing his first professional deal in December 2016.

Nelson also had four loan spells: Hoffenheim in 2018/19, Feyenoord in 2021/22, Fulham in 2024/25 and Brentford last season. Arsenal thanked him for his service and wished him and his family well for the future. The next move of his career is now wide open.

Rashford’s United future still not settled

Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United story, by contrast, is still being written.

The forward, back at Old Trafford after a loan spell at Barcelona last season, appears to be on the road to reintegration under Michael Carrick. He came off the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Hull last weekend and has the manager’s public backing.

Yet the window is still open. So is the exit door.

Turkish side Fenerbahce are interested as they gear up for the Champions League. Reports in Turkey claim club president Cihan Kamer wants talks over a deal for Rashford, who remains one of United’s most high-profile assets in a squad still in transition.

Zirkzee nears Old Trafford exit

One United forward is already close to the departure lounge.

Joshua Zirkzee is on the verge of a loan move to Fiorentina, with the Italian club in negotiations over a £4.2m deal that would include an option to buy next summer. With competition fierce in attack and minutes likely to be limited under Carrick, the move offers Zirkzee a clearer route to regular football.

Brighton content but alert as window ticks down

Down on the south coast, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is largely satisfied with his squad – but not closing the door completely.

“I'm really happy with the squad so far,” he said. “We have a few issues with some injured players. But we're there to find solutions, not complain about anything.

“Regarding the depth of the squad, overall I'm quite happy. The next days, everything can happen but it has to be a good fit regarding personality, character and our style of play.”

The message is calm but clear: Brighton will act only if the right player appears, not simply to make up numbers.

As the clock runs down across Europe, Alvarez’s stand-off in Madrid, Enzo’s future in west London and Liverpool’s reshaped front line all hang in the balance. By the time the window slams shut, the landscape at the top of English and European football could look very different.
