Arsenal Targets Kounde as Barcelona Faces Financial Dilemma

Arsenal have moved Jules Kounde to the top of their defensive shortlist, sensing a rare opening as Barcelona wrestle with finances and a shifting hierarchy at the back.

According to Sport, the London club are closely tracking the Frenchman in the final stretch of the transfer window, aware that his status at Camp Nou is no longer untouchable and that Barcelona, once again, are listening.

Barcelona’s balancing act

Barcelona’s summer has been dictated by the calculator. With the need to free up salary cap space, big names have already gone. Ronald Araujo has departed, and Marc Casado is expected to follow for around €40 million. Those exits have not closed the door; they have simply framed it. More sales remain firmly on the table.

Kounde, back in pre-season training, finds himself right in the middle of that equation. His contract runs to 2030, yet his long-term role feels anything but secure. The message from Barcelona is clear: a substantial offer, and he can go.

The shift is sporting as much as financial. Under new head coach Hansi Flick, Kounde no longer carries the “strategic untouchable” label that once protected him. Flick is planning to start Eric Garcia on the right side of the defence, a decision that cuts directly into Kounde’s minutes and influence.

A face-to-face meeting between Flick and Kounde is scheduled, a decisive conversation that will define whether he fights for his place in Catalonia or looks elsewhere for a central role.

Arteta’s defensive emergency

At Arsenal, the need is urgent rather than theoretical. Mikel Arteta has seen his defensive plans shredded before a ball has been kicked in anger.

William Saliba, the cornerstone of Arsenal’s back line, is sidelined with an indefinite back injury. Jurrien Timber, who was expected to be a flexible solution across the defence, continues to struggle with a chronic groin problem that restricts his availability and rhythm.

Arteta wants a hybrid defender, someone who can lock down centre-back and step out to right-back without disrupting the structure of the team. Kounde fits that profile almost perfectly: aggressive, quick across the ground, comfortable on the ball, and tactically intelligent enough to shift roles within a game.

Arsenal had initially fixed on Ezri Konsa as their main target. But Aston Villa’s stance was blunt. The Birmingham club demanded a fee in excess of €75 million for the England international, a figure Arsenal judged to be wildly out of step with the current market. That pursuit effectively ended the moment the price landed on the table.

The focus then swung fully to Kounde. The Frenchman may have signed a new deal not long ago, but contracts at Barcelona right now are as much tools as guarantees. For Arsenal, that instability offers opportunity.

Flick’s new defensive map

Flick’s blueprint at Barcelona is taking shape, and it does not revolve around Kounde. The German coach is confident in his defensive options and has backed a different mix of profiles.

On the left, Joao Cancelo is expected to arrive imminently, offering creativity and experience alongside the energetic Alejandro Balde. On the right, Flick has been convinced by Eric Garcia and highly rated youngster Xavi Espart, a combination that pushes Kounde down the pecking order.

Barcelona, for their part, are ready. A lucrative proposal for Kounde would not just ease the wage bill; it would also hand them the funds to move for a top-level replacement more aligned with Flick’s long-term vision.

So the choice falls squarely on Kounde. Stay and battle in a defence where others are now being favoured, or move to a club that plans to build a key role around him.

A three-way chase, but Arsenal in front

Arsenal are currently leading the race, but they are not alone. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation, aware that top-tier, versatile defenders rarely come onto the market with this kind of leverage.

For Arsenal, this is more than a luxury signing. It is a response to a crisis that threatens to undermine the start of their season. For Barcelona, it is a test of how far they are willing to bend sporting priorities to economic necessity.

And for Kounde, it is a career crossroads: remain part of a crowded cast at Camp Nou, or step into the spotlight elsewhere, with the Premier League, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga all within reach.
