Arsenal's Pursuit of Top Wingers: Barcola and Vinicius Jr
Arsenal’s search for a new left-sided star is turning into one of the sagas of the summer, with two of Europe’s most coveted wingers sitting at the heart of their plans.
On one side of the equation is Bradley Barcola, the Paris Saint-Germain flyer they have tracked closely. On the other is Vinicius Jr, the Real Madrid superstar who has emerged as Arsenal’s primary target for the left wing.
Both pursuits say everything about where the club now see themselves.
Liverpool move first on Barcola
Arsenal’s scouts have followed Barcola’s rise with interest, identifying the France international as a serious option to bolster Mikel Arteta’s forward line. At 23, with the ability to stretch defences and operate high and wide, he fits the profile of a long-term piece in an already youthful attack.
But while Arsenal watch, Liverpool have moved.
Reports in France state that Liverpool are in talks with PSG over a deal for Barcola, and are currently leading the race. The discussions, though, are anything but straightforward. PSG value the winger at around €170million (£145m), a figure that underlines both their financial strength and their reluctance to sell.
Liverpool, by contrast, are pushing for a fee closer to £85m. That gap is enormous. The kind of gap that keeps phones ringing until deadline day.
For Arsenal, that stand-off is significant. If their interest in Barcola remains active, they know any move is likely to drag towards the end of the window, when PSG’s stance is tested and Liverpool’s resolve is clearer. For now, they watch a rival try to prise open the door.
Vinicius Jr: the headline ambition
While Barcola’s future plays out in Paris and Merseyside meeting rooms, Arsenal’s main focus for the left flank is even more ambitious.
Vinicius Jr has been identified as the leading target for that position, with the club determined to add a truly elite option on the left. It is a bold play, the kind of move that only a side fresh from a Premier League title win can seriously contemplate.
The logic is obvious. Arsenal want a winger who can decide games on his own, who can live in the tightest spaces and still break a match open. Vinicius Jr fits that brief as few others do. Whether a deal can be forced from Real Madrid is another matter entirely, but the intent from north London is clear.
Wide reshuffle under way
This push for a marquee left winger comes as Arsenal quietly reshape their attacking options.
Leandro Trossard is already on his way out, with a £17m deal agreed with Besiktas earlier this month. His departure removes a reliable, versatile option from Arteta’s bench and raises the stakes for whoever comes in next.
Gabriel Martinelli’s future, too, remains uncertain. The Brazilian has been central to Arsenal’s resurgence, but the club are clearly open to revisiting the balance of their forward line if the right opportunity arises. It is not a fire sale. It is a recalibration.
Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge for £34m, adding another dimension to the attack and underlining Arsenal’s willingness to invest heavily in wide areas. Illan Meslier, the only other new face so far, strengthens the goalkeeping department of a squad that just lifted the Premier League trophy.
This is not a rebuild from weakness. It is a champion side trying to evolve before anyone else catches up.
The clock now ticks towards the 1 September deadline. Arsenal have made their intentions plain: they want a world-class left winger, and they are prepared to operate at the very top of the market to get one.
Whether that path leads to Vinicius Jr, a late twist in the Barcola chase, or an entirely different name, will define the edge of this title-winning team.
