Arsenal Offers Myles Lewis-Skelly to Chelsea and Manchester United

Arsenal’s summer reshuffle has claimed its first surprise name. Myles Lewis-Skelly, the highly rated Hale End graduate who only signed a new deal last year, is being offered to both Chelsea and Manchester United after the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes.

For a club that has guarded its academy gems so fiercely, this is a significant shift.

The 19-year-old midfielder featured 36 times in all competitions last season, but only 19 of those appearances came from the start. He ended the campaign on a high, impressing in the left eight role and earning a start in the Champions League final. That felt like a breakthrough moment, the kind that usually cements a youngster’s place in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Then Guimaraes walked through the door for £75million.

His signing has loaded an already competitive midfield. Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and now Guimaraes crowd the central areas, and pre-season has underlined the squeeze. Lewis-Skelly has started every warm-up game as a defensive midfielder in the absence of those senior names, his performances mixed as he shoulders a role that is not quite his natural brief.

The message is clear: he can play there, but he is no longer essential there.

That reality has prompted intermediaries to sound out new destinations. Chelsea and Manchester United have both been presented with the chance to move for him, with sources indicating that Lewis-Skelly has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time. He knows Cobham too, having spent part of his youth development there before committing to Arsenal.

Inside Arsenal, the stance is softening. There is a growing sense that a strong bid from Chelsea would be difficult to turn down. Not a fire sale, but a pragmatic call in a summer where big-money midfielders have already arrived and more minutes need to be found for established stars.

Chelsea, for their part, are not exactly short of business. They have already brought in 10 players, including pre-agreed deals, for just over £270m. Officially, the focus now leans towards outgoings and trimming a swollen squad for Xabi Alonso’s first season in charge.

Yet Chelsea under this ownership rarely ignore a perceived opportunity. If the price and structure are right, the door is never fully closed.

On paper, Lewis-Skelly fits several of Alonso’s key demands. He is naturally a central midfielder, capable of operating as a left-sided eight, but he also offers cover on the left of defence. That positional flexibility matters at Stamford Bridge. With Marc Cucurella gone, Chelsea have moved for Pep Chavarria, pending official confirmation, and already have Jorrel Hato as another left-back option. Lewis-Skelly would not arrive as a specialist full-back, but as someone who can patch holes without weakening the midfield unit.

And that midfield is already crowded. Alonso can call on Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Valentin Barco and Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez’s future has hovered in uncertainty this summer, but he is expected back in training this week and there is an internal expectation he will stay for Alonso’s debut campaign.

So where would Lewis-Skelly fit? As a rotation piece at first, a long-term project with Premier League experience and Champions League exposure, still young enough to mould but tested enough to trust. A player who can sit, shuttle or step wide if the system demands it.

For Arsenal, selling him to a direct rival would be a bold move, the sort that tends to define how confident a club really is in its recruitment and its hierarchy of talent. For Chelsea, it would be another bet on youth with resale value and tactical versatility.

The offer is on the table. Now it comes down to how much Chelsea, or United, believe that a 19-year-old nudged aside by Guimaraes can become the next midfield pillar rather than just another name in an already crowded room.
