Arsenal's Marli Salmon Withdraws from England Under-18 Squad

Arsenal prospect Marli Salmon has been forced to step out of the England Under-18 spotlight just as it was about to find him.

The 17-year-old defender, fresh from his first senior appearance of the season in Arsenal’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday, has withdrawn from Will Antwi’s England Under-18 squad through injury. The exact problem has not been disclosed, but it is serious enough to halt what was set to be a landmark week in his young career.

Breakthrough paused

Salmon had been named in the Under-18 squad for the first time, rewarded for his progress after four caps at Under-17 level. The call-up covered a trio of friendlies against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea, a valuable early taste of international tournament-style football.

Instead, he will remain at Arsenal to begin his recovery. The club are hopeful the setback is only short term. If that proves true, Salmon is expected to be back in action for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 against Sunderland on October 10 – unless Mikel Arteta decides his development is better served in the senior squad for the Premier League clash with Leeds on the same day.

His absence has opened the door for Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou, who has already experienced youth football with both Poland and England, to step into Antwi’s group.

Arsenal’s international headaches

Salmon’s withdrawal arrived on a day when England duty became a talking point across Arsenal’s dressing room.

Senior midfielder Declan Rice also pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, with his omission understood to be a case of load management rather than injury. Rice’s schedule has been relentless: 55 games for Arsenal last season, seven at the World Cup, and six starts from eight matches already in the current campaign, including all five Premier League fixtures.

The theme continued elsewhere. Defender Piero Hincapie was left out of Ecuador’s latest squad amid concerns over his fitness, adding another layer of caution around Arsenal players heading into the international window.

For Salmon, though, the picture is simpler. The debut will have to wait. How quickly he returns to that international pathway – and whether his next big step comes with the Under-21s or under Arteta’s gaze – will say plenty about Arsenal’s plans for one of their most highly rated young defenders.
