Arsenal's Renewed Interest in Ivan Fresneda: The €80 Million Dilemma

Ivan Fresneda is back in Arsenal’s orbit. Or at least, his name is.

Fresh reports from Portugal have once again tied the Sporting CP right-back to the Emirates, but one detail in particular stops the story in its tracks: the price.

A Long Chase, Rekindled

Arsenal’s interest in Fresneda is not some convenient, last-minute rumour to pad out a quiet window. The club have tracked him for years.

He first appeared on their radar as a teenager at Real Valladolid. Back then, he was 17, raw but clearly gifted, and the numbers involved were modest by today’s standards. A deal worth around €15 million was widely reported, with a €30 million release clause in his contract.

The relationship between player and club seemed to grow from there. When the January 2023 window opened, his representatives travelled to London amid a swirl of speculation that Arsenal were ready to move. There were claims that an agreement had been reached, only for the transfer to be pushed back to the summer.

The story gathered its own momentum. Fresneda spoke openly of his admiration for Mikel Arteta and said he was proud to be linked with Arsenal. He even started learning English, adding a personal twist to what looked like an inevitable move.

It never happened.

Instead, despite reports of a strong Arsenal offer that summer, Fresneda left Valladolid for Sporting in a deal worth just €9 million. For a player so heavily courted, the fee felt almost understated.

Then, silence. At least for a while.

The €80 Million Question

Now, the noise has returned.

Record in Portugal reports that the Spaniard is under contract with Sporting until June 2028, protected by a release clause set at €80 million. In the same breath, the paper links him once again with Arsenal and also with Newcastle, placing him back in the Premier League conversation.

That clause is the detail that jars.

Arsenal’s admiration is real enough. So is their need. Right-back has been a problem area at times, with injuries forcing Arteta to shuffle his back line and lean heavily on versatility. A young, athletic specialist in that role, one they have liked for years, naturally fits the profile.

But €80 million for a full-back? In this market, and in this Arsenal squad?

The club are expected to commit serious funds to attacking and midfield reinforcements. Given that context, the idea of them going anywhere near that figure for Fresneda feels wildly out of step with their usual transfer strategy.

Reality or Leverage?

There is another angle, and it is far more plausible.

With two years left on his current deal in Portugal, these renewed links to Arsenal and Newcastle may serve a more practical purpose: leverage. A player with long-standing admirers in England, tied to a high release clause, is a stronger hand in any negotiation over improved terms at Sporting.

That does not mean the interest is fabricated. Arsenal have tracked Fresneda long enough for the connection to be genuine. They may well continue to monitor his development in Lisbon, keeping open a door they once seemed close to walking through.

But monitoring is one thing. Meeting an €80 million clause is quite another.

Until the numbers make sense, this feels less like the start of a dramatic transfer saga and more like a reminder: Arsenal still know who Ivan Fresneda is. The question now is whether they ever decide he is worth the kind of fee that would turn a long-running subplot into a headline act.
