Arsenal Faces Key Injuries Ahead of Chelsea Clash

Arsenal’s faultless start to the Premier League season has met its first real snag – and it comes just days before a London derby that already felt loaded.

According to reports, Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera were both absent from Arsenal’s open training session at London Colney on Thursday, throwing their availability for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea into doubt. No Guimaraes. No Mosquera. No comfort for Mikel Arteta.

This is not the script Arsenal had in mind heading into a meeting with Xabi Alonso’s vibrant Chelsea, with both sides boasting perfect records from their opening two league games.

Guimaraes concern grows before first big test

Guimaraes arrived in North London this summer as the headline act. £75 million from Newcastle United, the new midfield anchor, the man meant to dictate the rhythm of Arsenal’s title push.

Instead, his early weeks have been dictated by a stubborn groin problem.

The Brazilian missed the opening-day 3-0 win over Coventry City, then was eased back with a 19-minute cameo off the bench in the 1-0 victory at Aston Villa on Monday. Arteta has handled him like glass since he walked through the door from St James’ Park, and the club has leaned hard into caution.

With so much depth in midfield, Arsenal can afford to be patient. But not without a cost. Guimaraes is the player who knits the structure together, the pivot that allows the rest of Arteta’s attacking pieces to rotate and roam. Losing that kind of presence for a game of this magnitude – against a Chelsea side that has already shown its cutting edge in wins over Fulham (3-2) and Brighton (4-3) – would reshape the tactical picture.

Arsenal might still cope. They just won’t look the same.

Mosquera setback tightens the backline

If Guimaraes is the strategic headache, Mosquera is the more immediate physical worry.

The 22-year-old Spaniard was forced off late in the win at Villa Park, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta played down the issue.

“He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri,” the Arsenal manager said after the game.

On Monday, it sounded like a precaution. By Thursday, with Mosquera missing from training, it felt like a warning.

If he does not make it, the path is clear for Konsa to step in from the start and make his full home debut at the Emirates. The former Aston Villa defender, signed for £51 million last month, is the obvious replacement and was bought for exactly these moments – to slot straight into a high-pressure fixture without fuss.

He may have to do it sooner than anyone at the club expected.

Defensive depth already under strain

Mosquera is not the only concern at the back. Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend as he continues to work his way towards full fitness, while William Saliba is already sidelined for a prolonged spell after an injury aggravated during the World Cup.

Arteta’s defensive resources, so carefully assembled and praised for their depth, are being stretched before autumn has even arrived. One more setback and the puzzle starts to look fragile.

And yet, the stakes do not soften.

Arsenal have opened the campaign with two wins from two, a commanding 3-0 against Coventry followed by a more rugged, hard-earned 1-0 at Villa Park. Chelsea have matched them stride for stride, trading control for chaos but finding the same reward: six points from six, seven goals scored, and momentum building under Alonso.

Two perfect records collide at the Emirates on Sunday. The question now is whether Arsenal’s starting XI will be anywhere near as complete as their league form.
