Argentina Cancels Asia Tour After Messi's Retirement, Plans Three Home Friendlies
Argentina Drops Asia Tour for Three Matches at Home
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has decided to cancel the planned Asian tour after Lionel Messi retired from international football. Instead, they will host a series of three friendly matches at home during the upcoming FIFA international window from September 21 to October 6.
Details of the Homecoming Series
According to ESPN Argentina, the first friendly is expected to take place at El Monumental, Buenos Aires, against either a South American or CONCACAF opponent. The next two matches are likely to be held outside the capital, with cities like Córdoba and Rosario emerging as strong candidates to welcome the national team back.
Why the Change in Plans?
ESPN journalist Diego Monroig revealed on Sportscenter that there is about a 90 percent chance the team will play all three fixtures on home soil. The original plan for an Asian tour, which included a near-confirmed match against China, fell apart following Messi’s decision to end his international career. This sudden change forced the AFA to rethink their schedule.
World Cup Qualification Discussions
Beyond friendlies, CONMEBOL is currently negotiating with FIFA over South America’s World Cup qualification spots. Since Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay will co-host the tournament, it's unclear whether their automatic berths will count within the continent’s usual five-and-a-half places or be additional. Argentina has formally asked to participate fully in the qualification process despite their hosting role.
Scaloni’s Challenges Ahead
Coach Lionel Scaloni faces a demanding international calendar as he prepares the team for the future without Messi. The autumn friendlies will offer a critical chance to test new tactics and integrate emerging players. Another FIFA window follows soon after, between November 9 and 17, making this transitional phase crucial before the 2027 season begins.
