Andros Townsend's Bizarre Incident with a Pitch Roller in Thailand
Andros Townsend once thought a cold, wet night at Stoke was the benchmark for away‑day hardship. Then came Pattani.
The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, found himself at the centre of a surreal incident on Saturday night when he was run over by a pitch roller during the warm-up before his side’s match at Pattani.
Townsend, 35, was going through his pre-match routine when a member of the home staff appeared to lose control of the heavy machine. The roller veered into the 13-cap England international, knocking him to the ground as his left leg briefly became trapped underneath.
For a few seconds, it looked serious. A veteran of the Premier League and international tournaments suddenly floored by a piece of ground equipment on the other side of the world.
The damage, thankfully, was not as bad as it first appeared. Townsend was able to continue and later came off the bench in the closing stages of Prachuap’s 3-0 victory, turning a potentially grim story into one of the most bizarre clips of the season.
Once the three points were secured, the winger did what he does as well as anyone in the social media era: he turned it into content.
A regular pundit on ITV and a growing cult figure online, Townsend headed to Instagram to joke about the incident, linking it back to a recent post in which he had contrasted a sun-soaked away day in Thailand with the infamous winds and rain of Stoke’s bet365 Stadium.
"It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why," he wrote on his Instagram story, inviting followers to watch the moment the roller clattered into him.
The internet did the rest. One post hailed him as "The King of Memes in Thai League history". Townsend leaned straight into it, replying: "trust me" followed by four laughing emojis.
From braving the elements in the Premier League to dodging pitch rollers in Thai League 1, Townsend has found a new kind of chaos abroad — and he’s clearly not losing his sense of humour along the way.
