Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time reshaping his squad – and once again, he’s gone back to what he knows best.

After a quieter window last year, this summer has seen a steady stream of arrivals: Shea Charles, then Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios. Now comes the most eye-catching move yet, another raid on Valdebebas for a player he knows inside out – 22-year-old midfielder Angel.

Arbeloa has already lived a footballing life alongside the Spaniard. He made Angel captain of his Real Madrid Castilla side, trusted him as the dressing-room voice, then rewarded him with a first-team debut when both coach and player were promoted mid-season. Angel responded with four La Liga appearances and a taste of Champions League football, a rapid rise that underlined Arbeloa’s faith.

That bond matters. Angel has signed a three-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, and he made it clear why the reunion works.

“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them.

“Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”

The move comes after Arbeloa’s side opened their Premier League campaign with back-to-back defeats, a shaky start that has sharpened the need for control and personality in midfield. Angel arrives to provide exactly that.

Standard Sport understands the deal begins as a one-year loan, with an obligation to buy for £18.3m. The club have confirmed he will then sign a long-term contract, underlining the belief that this is not a short-term fix but a core piece of the project.

Angel is no stranger to expectation. Before Madrid, he had already collected silverware in Sweden, winning both league and cup with Malmo. At 22, he carries the profile of a player ready to step straight in, and his arrival can be read as a direct response to the departure of Sasa Lukic, who joined Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the summer.

On signing, Angel spoke with the kind of clarity that will please supporters as much as his manager.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” he said after putting pen to paper.

He will not be alone in chasing a first appearance. Both Angel and Larsson are targeting debuts this weekend, when Fulham host Crystal Palace.
