Álvarez Rejects Man City Return Amid Barcelona Pursuit

Julián Álvarez has shut down the prospect of a dramatic return to Etihad Stadium before it ever really started.

According to Cadena SER, Manchester City contacted Atletico Madrid to explore bringing their former striker back to the club. They never got close to making a formal offer. Álvarez made sure of that. The 26-year-old told the Premier League champions he has no intention of returning to Manchester, killing the idea at source.

It’s a firm stance, and it comes in the middle of the most combustible transfer saga of the summer.

England says come back. Álvarez says no.

Álvarez is locked in a stand-off with Atletico and has already turned down Arsenal several times, despite the Gunners identifying him as their top attacking target and “dream” signing. For now, he is unmoved.

He doesn’t want London. He doesn’t want Manchester. He wants Barcelona.

His reluctance to return to England is not about football, as reported. It is about life off the pitch. The Argentine is said to be acutely aware of UK visa rules that would make it difficult for his family to visit regularly. Spain does not present the same hurdles, and that weighs heavily in his thinking.

So the equation is simple but brutal: stay in Spain, or accept a move that complicates his life away from the game.

The situation marks a striking shift from his first spell in England. City signed Álvarez from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, a deal that quickly looked like a bargain. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances and played his part in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble before Atletico arrived with an £82m offer two summers ago.

Now, the club that polished his reputation has come calling again, only to be rebuffed outright. City have been told no. Arsenal have been told no. Barcelona have been told no by Atletico.

Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that Arsenal may be his only realistic escape route from Madrid this summer. Still, he is standing firm. He wants to remain in Spain, and he wants Barcelona.

For the moment, that leaves him trapped: a forward who will not move back to England, tied to a club that will not sell him to Barca.
