Alonso's Chelsea Fitness Race Before Brentford Clash
Xabi Alonso will leave his final Chelsea team sheet until the last possible moment, with key names still racing the clock ahead of Friday night’s trip to Brentford.
The Spaniard confirmed that, as things stand, no player has been formally ruled out before the squad’s last training session. Decisions will be made on Friday morning, once the medical staff deliver their final reports and late fitness tests are complete.
At the heart of it all sits Moises Caicedo. The midfielder is edging closer to full fitness and, by Alonso’s account, progressing quickly, but the manager refused to promise anything before seeing how he comes through the final checks. Caution, not desperation, is steering Chelsea’s approach.
“In terms of injuries, no one is ruled out for Friday so I prefer to be cautious,” Alonso said. “Moises Caicedo is getting closer to fitness. We will see Reece James’ development before deciding.”
Reece James remains under a carefully managed recovery protocol, with the club determined not to rush their captain back. His status will be monitored right up until the cut-off, as Chelsea weigh the value of his influence against the risk of a setback.
Up front, Brazil forward Joao Pedro could feature, though his international availability is still unclear. Alonso made it clear that any talk of call-ups can wait. Chelsea’s immediate concern is Brentford, not what happens once players disperse for national duty.
Respect for Brentford’s bite
Alonso has spent the build-up drilling his squad on what awaits them at the Gtech Community Stadium. He has gone back over last season’s meeting, using the footage as a warning as much as a guide.
Brentford’s reputation for set-pieces and quick counter-attacks is well known, but Alonso insisted that tagging them as a one-dimensional, direct side would be a mistake. He sees a complete team, dangerous in every phase.
“They do set-pieces and fast transitions very well, but they are a complete team with or without the ball,” he noted. “They have great strength playing at home, so it is going to be a big challenge.”
The message is blunt: underestimate Brentford and you get punished. Chelsea have been told to switch on from the first whistle and stay there. Any lapse in concentration, any slack moment in defensive structure, and Brentford will pounce.
No margin for error
Alonso underlined that the Premier League offers no room for missteps, especially away from home. He wants intensity from kick-off, clarity in possession, and absolute discipline when Brentford load the box for dead-ball situations.
A win on Friday night would do more than just add three points. It would send Chelsea into the international break with momentum, a platform to build on once the squad reconvenes.
The Blues kick off at Brentford at 8:00 pm BST on Friday. The line-up, and perhaps the tone of their next few weeks, will be decided in those final hours before the team coach rolls out.
