Al-Ittihad Signs Fares Abdi to Strengthen Left-Back Position

Al-Ittihad have moved quickly to close a key gap in their squad, sealing the signing of left-back Fares Abdi from Neom after wrapping up the final financial and contractual details in recent hours.

The Saudi giants announced the deal across their official channels, confirming that head coach Jens Wissing had personally pushed for Abdi’s arrival. The German wanted a specialist to shore up the left flank, targeting the 27-year-old as a direct response to the loss of Mario Metaj.

This was not a token addition. Abdi emerged from a shortlist of several options for the role, winning the internal battle to become Al-Ittihad’s new first-choice candidate on that side of defence. The move slots neatly into the club’s broader summer rebuild as they look to assemble a squad capable of meeting rising expectations in the new season.

Born in California, Abdi’s football education began on American pitches before he switched his focus to the Saudi game. He entered the Saudi league with Al-Wehda in 2020, then built his reputation through spells at Al-Qadsiah and Al-Fayha.

Last summer he joined Neom, where he became a reliable presence, featuring in 34 matches and delivering 3 assists from the back. That body of work, combined with his league experience and versatility down the flank, convinced Wissing he was the right fit.

Now Abdi steps into Jeddah with a clear brief: make the left-back spot his own and ensure Al-Ittihad do not feel that void again.
