Ait-Nouri's Attacking Ambition Under Maresca
Rayan Ait-Nouri has never hidden his love of getting on the ball and driving forward. Now, under Enzo Maresca, he wants the numbers to match the ambition.
Fresh from his first goal for City in the win over a K-League XI, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender made it clear this is no one-off target. He wants it to become a habit.
“I would like to,” he told the club’s official channel when asked if he aims to score regularly. “It was my first goal for City, and it's a part of the game I really enjoy. I have always tried to play in an attacking way, but I don't score all the time.”
The finish clearly meant more than a simple pre-season strike. It felt like a starting point.
“It's a real sensation for me,” he said. “I want to learn every day, work more and more to add as much to my game as I can.”
Maresca’s system is already pushing him in that direction. Rather than hugging the touchline in a traditional full-back role, the 25-year-old operated higher up the pitch, tucked in behind striker Divin Mubama. With Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo flanking him in those advanced pockets, Ait-Nouri formed part of an aggressive, fluid line behind the No 9.
The reward was City’s first win of pre-season under their new head coach. More importantly, it offered a glimpse of how Maresca wants his side to look: defenders stepping into midfield, attackers rotating, pressure applied in waves.
Now comes the real examination.
City close out their tour with a marquee friendly against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, a very different kind of opponent and a far sterner test of Maresca’s early ideas.
“It will be a different game than the last two games,” Ait-Nouri admitted. “We really enjoy playing this kind of game against one of the better teams in Europe; it will help us really prepare for next season.
“We know about Atletico's level, and it will be good to play them before we face Arsenal next week.”
One goal on tour has whetted his appetite. Atletico, then Arsenal, will show whether Ait-Nouri’s attacking reinvention under Maresca can carry through when the stakes start to rise.
