2026 Ballon d'Or Nominees: Announcement Date and Ceremony Details

When Will the 2026 Ballon d'Or Nominees Be Announced?

The 70th edition of the Ballon d'Or will name its winner in October, celebrating the standout player from the 2025/26 season with soccer's most prestigious individual honor.

Last year's champion, Rodri, who helped Spain secure a World Cup this summer, may be in contention again for the award.

This year’s ceremony marks a special milestone and will take place at a unique venue compared to past years.

Shortlist Reveal

France Football is set to unveil the nominees for both men's and women's 2026 Ballon d'Or on Tuesday, September 8, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET. The announcement will feature a list of 30 players vying for the award.

From this shortlist, the eventual winner will be chosen after votes are counted at the gala, ranking all 30 candidates to find the top-ranked player.

Details of the Award Ceremony

The award ceremony is scheduled for Monday, October 26. Traditionally held in Paris, this year’s event will move to London as a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the very first Ballon d'Or winner.

How Winners Are Selected

  • Men's Ballon d'Or: A panel of international journalists chosen by France Football selects the 30 finalists.
  • Yashin Award: Shortlist of goalkeepers for the world’s best goalkeeper prize is decided by the same panel.
  • Women's Ballon d'Or: Chosen by 50 global women’s soccer journalists.
  • Kopa Trophy: A group of 32 former Ballon d'Or winners nominates the 10 finalists under 21 years old.

The number of jurors has been reduced to sharpen focus on individual merit and ensure a fairer selection process. Yet, controversies persist, like Madrid’s vocal objections to Rodri’s win and debates over Messi’s 2023 triumph, showing the system still faces challenges.
