Zechiël Reflects on Lille Move: Grateful for Feyenoord Stay

Gjivai Zechiël stood on the brink of a major move this summer. Lille OSC pushed hard, Feyenoord held firm, and the 22-year-old midfielder suddenly found himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war he ultimately never left Rotterdam for.

The French club came back several times and kept raising the stakes. Their final bid reportedly climbed to around €17 million including bonuses – serious money, and serious intent.

“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël told Voetbal International, reflecting on the hectic final days of August. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view.”

For a young midfielder, Ligue 1 and regular European football with Lille looked like a logical next step. The door was open, the offer was on the table, and Feyenoord knew exactly what was at stake.

They still said no.

Inside De Kuip, the hierarchy had already decided: Zechiël was no longer a promising squad player, but a key figure. Letting him go this late in the window was not an option. The club dug in, protected their core, and the deal collapsed.

Time has done the rest.

“Looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” Zechiël admitted. The tone is calm now, not the rush of deadline day, but the voice of a player who feels he has landed in the right place. “I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”

The bond is no longer just about minutes and tactics. It runs through the training ground, the dressing room, the technical staff.

“In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well,” he said.

Feyenoord didn’t just block the exit; they moved to secure the future. At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the club had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël over a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but Feyenoord want that commitment nailed down even tighter.

“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footer said of the expected extension, keeping the door open to a formal announcement but leaving no doubt about his intentions.

On the pitch, his response to the transfer saga has been emphatic.

Zechiël has started the new season in blistering form. Across Feyenoord’s six competitive matches so far, he has produced four goals and three assists – numbers that underline exactly why Lille were willing to spend big, and why Feyenoord refused to cash in.

The move to France never materialised. The price tag is back in the drawer. What remains is a midfielder growing in influence in Rotterdam, a club that made a clear statement by keeping him, and a season that suddenly looks like it might belong to Gjivai Zechiël.
