What Can France Expect From Morocco at the 2026 World Cup?

Morocco Sets Sights on a Strong 2026 World Cup Run

Four years after stunning the football world by reaching the semi-finals for the first time, Morocco is headed to North America with high hopes and a squad boasting even greater talent than the one that competed in Qatar.

A New Coach, A New Approach

History might be repeating itself, as Morocco has changed its head coach once again. Mohamed Ouahbi, who led the Moroccan Under-20 team to a World Cup victory last year, took over from Walid Regragui in March. This means the Atlas Lions have limited time to adjust to Ouahbi’s tactical vision.

Early signs are promising. In late March, Morocco drew 1-1 against Ecuador and then secured a 2-1 win over Paraguay. Ouahbi favors a 4-2-3-1 formation that often shifts into a 4-2-2-2, opening space down the right flank for captain Achraf Hakimi.

The Weight of Expectations

This Moroccan squad faces pressure unlike before. In 2022, their deep run was unexpected. Now ranked among the top 10 teams worldwide, they must deliver consistent performances. Ouahbi acknowledged this burden, saying, "I am aware of the expectations, but very honoured. I am committed to working with seriousness, humility and determination and also a lot of patriotism to continue on the path of progression of this team."

The mental barriers have been broken with the semi-final appearance and rise in FIFA rankings. Yet, an unusual episode in January still haunts them. During the African Cup of Nations final, Senegal's players walked off the field protesting a penalty given to Morocco. After delays, Brahim Diaz missed a Panenka penalty, and Senegal won 1-0. Later, the Confederation of African Football awarded the title to Morocco, sparking an appeal by Senegal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

This controversial final remains a sensitive topic and could affect the team if results falter. Ouahbi reflected, "We all lived a trauma as Moroccans. That final was a difficult moment, but I think what matters the most is continuity." For Morocco, continuity means matching or surpassing their Qatar achievement.

The Moroccan Fan Presence in North America

Moroccan supporters are expected to be vibrant and numerous once again, filling their seats in the USA just like in previous tournaments. With around 30,000 Moroccans living across New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and parts of Canada, the diaspora will bring energy and loud support. The national anthem will likely be a highlight, resonating through stadiums and beyond.
