Wayne Rooney Warns of Massive Blow for Manchester United Over Gabriel's Departure

Wayne Rooney says Manchester United face a “massive blow” if 15-year-old sensation Gabriel follows through on his request to leave Old Trafford, with Real Madrid and Barcelona already circling.

“As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players. It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid. You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”

Rooney’s words cut to the heart of United’s dilemma. They have pushed hard to convince Gabriel and his camp that his future should be in Manchester, tailoring their approach to a teenager they regard as a future first-team star. “But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”
