Vozinha Chooses Colo Colo Over Messi’s Inter Miami

Vozinha chooses Colo Colo over Messi’s Miami after World Cup heroics

Cape Verde’s World Cup cult hero has made his choice. Not Miami. Not Major League Soccer. Chile.

Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper who lit up the World Cup with a string of defiant performances, has signed for Colo Colo as a free agent, ending weeks of speculation that had tied his future to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

He had been without a club since leaving Portuguese side Chaves on July 1. His situation, combined with his exploits on the biggest stage, made him one of the more intriguing names on the market. A veteran without a contract, but suddenly with global visibility.

The World Cup changed everything.

Cape Verde arrived as debutants, expected to make up the numbers. They left as one of the stories of the tournament, and their captain in goal became its unlikely protagonist. The Blue Sharks ground out three dogged draws to reach the Round of 32, then pushed defending champions Argentina into extra time before finally falling 3-2 in a breathless knockout tie.

For long stretches of that match, it felt like Vozinha alone was holding back the tide. He flung himself at shots, clawed efforts away from the corners, and repeatedly shut down Messi in one of the most absorbing individual duels of the competition. Each save nudged the narrative closer to what would have been one of the great World Cup shocks.

It did not quite happen, but the impression remained.

"We have dignified Cape Verde as a national team in most parts of the world," Vozinha said after that defeat. "Today, we fought on an equal footing against Argentina." It was not bravado. Anyone who watched that game knew it was true.

Inside the Cape Verde camp, there was no surprise at his emergence on the global stage. Defender Pico Lopes summed up the feeling: "He's a quality, quality goalkeeper. Probably hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves before this. ... He's a legend in Cape Verdean football." The World Cup simply allowed the rest of the world to catch up.

Speculation quickly followed. An MLS move was widely touted, with Inter Miami among the clubs reportedly tracking him. The idea had an obvious appeal: the man who had frustrated Messi now potentially joining the Argentine’s club in the United States. It would have been a neat narrative arc.

Instead, he has chosen a very different path.

Colo Colo, giants of Chilean football and a club that thrive on personality and presence, announced his arrival with a simple, loaded caption on social media: “AURA.” No fanfare needed. Anyone who watched him this past month understood exactly what they were buying.

His career has never followed the glamorous route. Vozinha’s journey has been built on free transfers and quiet moves: Chaves, AS Trencin, AEL Limassol, Gil Vicente, Zimbru Chisinau, Progresso. A reported market value of around €500,000 has never translated into a transfer fee. Every step has been taken without a cheque changing hands, his worth measured on the pitch rather than in the market.

What he brings to Colo Colo is not just a goalkeeper with 92 caps since his Cape Verde debut in 2012. He brings a story, a presence, and the authority of a man who has captained his country through the most important month in its footballing history.

At 40, this is not a final lap for show. It is another serious chapter. The World Cup gave Vozinha a global platform. Now we find out what he can do with it in the white shirt of Colo Colo, far from Miami, but right in the heart of South American football.
