Vinicius Junior Faces Contract Uncertainty at Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior has been a hot topic at Real Madrid recently, especially after Arsenal showed interest in signing him. Although no formal offer has been made, the Spanish club is increasingly worried about extending the forward's contract, which will expire after this season.

The stalled contract talks are just one of three major issues Vinicius faces this summer. On top of that, there are two other important on-field challenges he must navigate for the upcoming 2026-27 season, which could be his final year with the Galacticos depending on how negotiations go.

Contract Negotiations Hit a Roadblock

Vinicius has wanted to renew his deal since 2024 amid interest from Saudi Arabian clubs. The disagreement mainly comes down to money. According to Trivela, Vinicius seeks approximately €25.5 million per year, including a loyalty bonus for staying at Real Madrid since 2018.

This figure is close to what Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund reportedly offered Al-Hilal: €170 million over five years. Yet, Real Madrid remains firm, offering around €17 million annually, roughly two-thirds of what Vinicius wants. Talks have been stalled since Xabi Alonso became manager, but Arsenal’s interest could push things forward soon.

If no agreement is reached by January 2027, Vinicius will be free to sign a pre-contract with any club willing to meet his demands. Currently, he earns nearly €15.3 million per year, highlighting a wage gap of about €8.5 million between player and club offers.

A New Manager and a Complex Relationship

Since Ancelotti, Vinicius has not found a manager at Real Madrid with whom he shares a strong bond. Under Xabi Alonso, tensions rose, including a public clash during a LaLiga match against Barcelona. Although under Arbeloa his numbers improved, internal squad turmoil limited their time together.

Jose Mourinho returns as manager after leading the club between 2010 and 2013, but his history with Vinicius is complicated. During last season’s Champions League play-off between Real Madrid and Benfica, an incident involving alleged racial abuse directed at Vinicius by Gianluca Prestianni brought tension. Mourinho defended the accused player, claiming the language was homophobic, not racist, which sparked controversy.

Mourinho said at the time, "There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. A stadium where Vinicius plays something happens. Always." He also claimed his response was "better" than Arbeloa’s, who openly defended Vinicius.

The incident resulted in the adoption of the 'Vinicius Junior Law' by FIFA for the World Cup, allowing referees to send off players who cover their mouths while abusing opponents.

Finding His Role in a Changing Team

Vinicius returned from holidays after a solid World Cup showing despite Brazil’s round of 16 exit to Norway. His role at Real Madrid, however, has diminished since the arrival of Kylian Mbappe, who now commands much of the attacking spotlight.

Under Alonso, Vinicius played as a fixed center-forward, putting his starting spot at risk. With Arbeloa, he recovered form, scoring 22 goals. For Brazil, he thrived when given freedom to roam between lines, sometimes leading the attack.

The pressing question is how Mourinho will manage both Mbappe and Vinicius in his system. Vinicius needs to regain the level that earned him the world's best player award in 2024 and showed flashes of during the World Cup.

Rodrygo’s early-season absence also forces Vinicius to adapt. Meanwhile, Real Madrid is close to signing Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, a strong World Cup performer who could play on the left wing if Vinicius departs.
