The Champions League means a lot to the board and supporters," Friedel said. "If Bayern don’t win, there will be pressure on Kompany, and he knows that. But it’s about how you lose."

He highlighted Bayern’s recent matches against Paris Saint-Germain as prime examples. Those encounters featured incredibly high-level football, with both teams’ attacking units performing exceptionally well. Friedel recalls the first leg as one of the most thrilling games he’s seen.

In fact, the front threes from both sides scored over 8.2 in match data, an unusually high rating for top-tier fixtures. Losing a semi-final in such a hard-fought contest shouldn’t trigger calls for a managerial change.

Friedel differentiates between losing a close battle against a top European team and suffering a heavy defeat. For example, if Bayern were to be eliminated 4-0 on aggregate in the round of 16, it would be reasonable for the board to reconsider Kompany’s future. But a tight semi-final loss tells a different story.
