Victor Osimhen has spent years circling the Premier League without ever quite landing. That may not last much longer.

From Wolfsburg prospect to Charleroi revelation, from Lille breakthrough to title-winning force at Napoli, the Nigerian striker has built a career on forcing doors open. Now at Galatasaray, he is smashing them down.

The numbers in Turkey are outrageous: 65 goals in 78 appearances. Defenders know exactly what’s coming – the pace, the power, the ruthless finishing – and still can’t live with him.

No wonder England’s biggest clubs keep looking his way.

Premier League giants on alert

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all weighed up moves for Osimhen. None of them have pulled the trigger yet, but the interest has never really cooled.

This is a forward who fired Napoli to a historic Serie A title, scoring 31 times across the 2022-23 campaign. That season turned him from a highly rated striker into one of Europe’s most coveted No.9s. It also showed he can carry the weight of a club’s history on his shoulders.

The question now is not whether he could handle the Premier League. It’s who is brave enough to build their attack around him.

Cole: “He scores goals. Everywhere.”

When someone like Andy Cole talks about strikers, people listen. The 1999 Treble winner, speaking to GOAL in association with Unibet, didn’t bother dressing it up.

“He does. He scores goals,” Cole said when asked if Osimhen has what it takes to thrive in England. “He scored goals in Italy and he's scoring goals in Turkey as well.”

For Cole, the issue is not talent. That box is already ticked. The complexity lies in the mechanics of a modern mega-transfer.

“There’s many different factors in signing a player from a respective country,” he added. “It's not all about just the salary or the transfer fee. There could be many different things that go on.

“If he does come to the Premier League, which I think he will be very good in the Premier League, you never know who he'll go to.”

That last line lingers. Everyone wants a striker like Osimhen. Not everyone can get him.

United legends make their pitch

Around Old Trafford, the message from former players has been consistent: Manchester United need a ruthless No.9. Osimhen’s name keeps landing at the top of that list.

Patrice Evra put it bluntly when speaking to GOAL about what United are missing: “A striker, someone who scores a goal. I think that's what I'm looking at. That's why for me, Osimhen is the best. He’s a perfect example.”

Louis Saha, another ex-United forward who understands the pressure of that shirt, has been just as emphatic in his backing.

“I really like Victor Osimhen. He's definitely got the character, he's got the quality,” Saha said. “He’s also got good European pedigree: he was a success in France, he was a champion in Italy with Napoli and he’s gone to Turkey with Galatasaray and been brilliant, a move that he probably didn't want, let's be honest.”

The respect runs deeper than just goals. Saha sees personality, presence and a mentality built for elite expectations.

“He’s scored goals at every level. He’s got Champions League experience, and further more, he’s got the type of personality and charisma that this United squad could really benefit from.

“I think he would be a transformational signing for Manchester United. If you think about the pressure that he was under at Napoli, firing the club to its first title in 33 years, then he’s the perfect man to lead the line for Manchester United. I think he would have a huge impact at United. I would love to see the club hierarchy move for him, I think he is exactly what we need.”

The next move

Osimhen turns 27 with a complete centre-forward’s toolkit and a CV that stretches across Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and now Turkey. Each stop has hardened him, sharpened him, pushed him closer to the top of the game.

The Premier League has watched him grow from afar. The admiration is no secret. The need, at several clubs, is obvious.

At some point, admiration has to turn into action. Who blinks first?
