United reignite Tchouameni chase as Madrid considers sale
Manchester United’s search for a new midfield anchor has swung sharply back towards Aurélien Tchouameni, with Real Madrid now reportedly prepared to cash in on the France international this summer.
According to The Sun, Madrid have softened their stance on the 24-year-old, who had previously been regarded as untouchable at the Bernabéu. The European champions are said to be ready to listen to offers as they look to raise funds for an audacious move for Manchester City lynchpin Rodri.
For United, the shift is significant. For months, Tchouameni has been the name at the top of their list, the ideal profile to lock down the base of midfield. The suggestion from Spain is that a fee in the region of £68 million could be enough to tempt Madrid into a sale – a figure that drags the deal out of fantasy and into the realm of possibility.
Mourinho’s plan meets Madrid’s reality
Jose Mourinho, back in charge at Madrid, had reportedly hoped to keep Tchouameni as part of his core midfield structure. The Frenchman, signed in 2022 as Casemiro’s heir, was supposed to be the long-term shield in front of the defence.
But the equation has changed. The chance to move for Rodri – arguably the most complete holding midfielder in world football – has altered Madrid’s priorities. To fund such a move, sacrifices are required, and Tchouameni has moved from indispensable to expendable asset.
For United, that recalculation in the Spanish capital is a rare opening at the elite end of the market.
United’s rebuilt engine room still needs a pillar
Old Trafford has already seen major midfield surgery this summer. Casemiro has departed, ending the short but eventful chapter that began when Madrid first replaced him with Tchouameni. United have responded by investing heavily: Youri Tielemans has arrived for £35 million, Andrey Santos for £50 million.
Those signings add craft and energy. What they do not fully guarantee is the defensive authority and positional discipline that Tchouameni offers at his best.
Inside United, the Frenchman is viewed as the missing piece – the player who can sit behind Tielemans and Bruno Fernandes, read danger early, and allow the more expressive midfielders to play on the front foot without constantly looking over their shoulders. Madrid once saw him in exactly the same light when they prised him away in 2022. Now United want to complete the circle and make him Casemiro’s long-term successor in Manchester as well.
The stakes of a late-window power move
If negotiations progress without drama, Tchouameni could become United’s final major midfield addition of the window, the cornerstone of a new-look spine. It would be a statement that the club intend to build a side around structure, not just star names.
For Madrid, his sale would be no less symbolic. Offloading the man brought in to replace Casemiro in order to chase Rodri underlines how aggressively they are prepared to reshape their midfield again, even after recent success.
Two European giants, one pivotal holding midfielder, and another circling in the background. As the window ticks towards its close, Tchouameni’s future now sits at the heart of one of the summer’s defining transfer sagas.
