International football is on the verge of a major change. UEFA plans to approve a new format in Thessaloniki that mirrors the Swiss system used in the club Champions League. This adjustment will affect the Nations League as well as qualification tournaments for the World Cup and European Championships beginning in 2028, according to AS.

A New League of 36 National Teams

The traditional group stage will be replaced by a league consisting of 36 countries. Each nation will face six opponents, playing three matches at home and three away. These opponents will be from various technical levels, making fixtures less predictable and more competitive. UEFA aims to boost the appeal of matches and increase the value of broadcast rights through this format.

Changes to the International Calendar and Venues

FIFA will introduce double international windows where teams play four games over a 15-day period. This scheduling shift is designed to fit the new format. Additionally, it has been confirmed that Camp Nou will host the 2029 Champions League final, adding prestige to the iconic stadium's event calendar.
