History of the UEFA Champions League

Since its start in 1955, the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League, has been the highest honor in European club football. Each champion etches their name into football history by lifting this coveted trophy. Initially called the European Cup, the competition was rebranded in 1992 to become the Champions League, marking a new era for elite clubs across Europe.

Before 1992, the tournament featured one league champion from each country plus the defending champion in a straight knockout format. After 1992, UEFA revamped it to prevent Europe's top teams from breaking away and forming their own league, introducing group stages and expanding participation. Red Star Belgrade (1991)

Steaua București (1986)

Hamburg (1983)
