Tyrell Malacia Joins FC Cincinnati on Free Transfer

FC Cincinnati have made one of the statement moves of the MLS summer, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and handing him a long-term deal in Ohio.

The 27-year-old Netherlands international has signed a contract through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 MLS season, as Cincinnati double down on their push to remain among the Eastern Conference elite. It is a fresh chapter for a defender whose time in England promised much but was repeatedly derailed by injury.

Cincinnati clear the runway

To get Malacia through the door, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative with their roster puzzle. The club secured an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money in the opposite direction.

That is not a move you make for a squad filler. It underlines how central the club believe Malacia can be to their plans, both immediately and over the next several seasons.

General Manager Chris Albright made no attempt to hide his delight, saying: “We are excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience.” For a side already built on intensity and ambition, adding a defender schooled at Feyenoord and hardened at Manchester United is a clear signal: Cincinnati are not easing off.

Leaving the Old Trafford grind behind

Malacia’s time at United never quite followed the script. He arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 as one of Erik ten Hag’s early signings, quickly catching the eye with his aggression in the tackle and his willingness to play on the front foot.

Then the injuries came. Momentum stalled. Opportunities shrank.

Even so, he still racked up 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competition. Those minutes came against some of the sharpest attacking talent in the game, and they leave him far more seasoned than his age might suggest.

Now, he trades the glare of Old Trafford for the noise of TQL Stadium and a fanbase that has already been teased with glimpses of their new full-back across the club’s social media channels. The anticipation around his debut is building by the day.

A defender with silverware and scars

For all the frustration of his fitness battles, Malacia does not arrive in MLS empty-handed. He was part of the Manchester United squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a long-awaited return to silverware for the club and a valuable taste of pressure football for the Dutchman.

He heads to Cincinnati on the back of success in his homeland as well. A recent loan spell at PSV Eindhoven saw him contribute to an Eredivisie title in the 2024-25 season, adding another major honour to a growing résumé.

Across Europe, Malacia has already passed the 250-game mark in professional football. He has faced Champions League wingers, navigated Premier League intensity, and lived inside dressing rooms where trophies are not a dream but a demand.

Orange and Blue meet Oranje

Cincinnati are not just getting a club player; they are getting a Netherlands international. Malacia has nine senior caps and was part of the Dutch squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team pushed to the quarter-finals before bowing out in dramatic fashion.

That experience, both the highs and the heartache, now drops into the “Orange and Blue” locker room. For a side with serious postseason ambitions, the value of a defender who has already lived through World Cup tension and European knockout nights is obvious.

The question now is simple: how quickly can Malacia turn that pedigree into dominance on MLS pitches, and how far can Cincinnati ride the surge of a left-back with a point to prove?
