Tottenham Signs Andy Robertson on Free Transfer

Tottenham have moved decisively in the summer market, confirming the signing of former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer – a statement addition and a clear marker of intent under Roberto De Zerbi.

The Scotland captain, who made 378 appearances for Liverpool, joins Spurs on 1 July after allowing his contract at Anfield to run down. It ends one of the Premier League’s most influential modern full-back partnerships and drops one of its key figures straight into a new project in north London.

This is a move that has been simmering for months. Robertson came close to swapping Merseyside for north London in January, only for Liverpool to block the deal when they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma. The plug was pulled, the window closed, and the left-back stayed put.

The idea, though, never went away.

Spurs have changed head coach since then, but the new man in charge needed no convincing. De Zerbi has long admired Robertson’s profile and wasted little time in giving the green light once it became clear the 30-year-old would walk away from Liverpool as a free agent this summer.

“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said, outlining exactly why Tottenham have pushed so hard to get this done.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

It is hard to argue with that assessment. Robertson arrives with a medal collection and a reputation forged in title races, Champions League nights and relentless seasons under Jürgen Klopp. Spurs, chasing a return to those stages, are betting that his drive and standards can shift the dressing-room temperature as much as his left foot reshapes their build-up play.

The move also underlines a broader shift. Tottenham, so often accused of hesitating in key moments of the market, have acted early to secure an elite, battle-tested defender without a transfer fee. Robertson, for his part, trades one demanding environment for another, swapping the red of Liverpool for the white of a club desperate to turn potential into trophies.

He will report for duty on 1 July. From there, the real intrigue begins: how quickly can one of Liverpool’s great modern servants become a cornerstone of De Zerbi’s Tottenham?
