Thomas Partey Arrives in Riyadh for Al-Shabab Move

Thomas Partey has touched down in Riyadh, edging closer to the next chapter of a career that has already taken him through La Liga, the Premier League and the World Cup spotlight.

The Black Stars deputy captain is in Saudi Arabia to undergo his medical ahead of a proposed switch to Al-Shabab. If he passes the tests as expected, the 33-year-old is set to sign a one-year deal with the Saudi Pro League club as a free agent.

A new stage after Villarreal and Arsenal

Partey’s arrival comes after the end of his short spell with Villarreal. His one-year contract with the Spanish side expired this summer, leaving him free to choose his next move.

He featured 25 times in all competitions for Villarreal in the 2025/26 campaign, according to Transfermarkt, a season that helped him re-establish rhythm after his long stint in England.

Before Spain, the midfielder spent several seasons at Arsenal, where he became a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s rebuild. He made 130 appearances and scored nine goals for the London club before departing the Premier League in 2025 when his deal ran down.

Now Al-Shabab are poised to become the latest stop on a journey that has consistently kept him at elite level.

Reunion in Riyadh

The move does not only offer Partey a new league and a fresh challenge. It also brings a familiar face.

At Al-Shabab he will link up again with Yannick Carrasco, his former teammate at Atletico Madrid. The Belgian winger has been with the Riyadh-based side for the past three seasons, and their reunion gives the Saudi club a core with Champions League and top European experience at its heart.

For Partey, the presence of a trusted old colleague in the dressing room could ease the transition into a new environment and a different football culture.

Ghana watching closely

This transfer is not just a club story. Ghana will be watching every step.

Partey remains one of the pillars of the Black Stars and their deputy captain. He played a key role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring three times as Ghana reached the Round of 32.

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers starting in September, his choice of club and the minutes he earns there carry real weight. Ghana missed the last AFCON and cannot afford another absence from the continent’s main stage.

Regular football in Riyadh, combined with the physical demands of the Saudi Pro League, could keep him sharp for the national team’s push to return to the tournament.

If Al-Shabab give him the platform to play consistently and stay fit, the benefits will be felt well beyond their own midfield.

Fitness work paying off

This move has not come out of nowhere. Partey has been putting in the groundwork.

Recent reports from Turkey showed the midfielder stepping up his fitness regime after becoming a free agent, sharpening himself for whatever opportunity came next. Those sessions now look like preparation for a decisive late-career move.

From Accra to Madrid, London, Villarreal and now Riyadh, Partey has rarely taken the easy route. The question now is simple: can this Saudi chapter keep him at the heart of both club ambitions and Ghana’s charge back to Africa’s top table?
