Thapelo Maseko's Transfer to FC Copenhagen: A New Chapter

Mamelodi Sundowns have cleared the way for Thapelo Maseko’s European leap, with the club reaching agreement on a transfer fee with Danish giants FC Copenhagen earlier this week.

The 22-year-old is expected to board a flight to Denmark before the weekend to undergo his medical. If all goes to plan, the deal will then be signed off and his next chapter officially begins.

End of a turbulent Sundowns spell

For Maseko, the move draws a firm line under a frustrating spell at Chloorkop.

He arrived at Sundowns from SuperSport United in July 2023 on the back of a breakout season with Matsatsantsa, a rapid winger tipped to become one of the PSL’s next big exports. Instead, his role slowly shrank. Opportunities dried up, competition stiffened, and his influence faded.

The situation deteriorated to the point where he spent the final six months of last season on loan at AEL Limassol in Cyprus. There, away from the glare and expectation at Sundowns, he rebuilt himself. Regular minutes, renewed confidence, and a resurgence in form pushed him back into the Bafana Bafana frame.

That revival paid off spectacularly at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Maseko played a starring role for South Africa on the global stage, including scoring the winning goal against South Korea as Bafana reached the knockout phase for the first time in their history. On the biggest stage, he delivered.

Yet when Sundowns named their squad for a pre-season tour of Austria last month, his name was missing. The omission turned heads. For many, it felt like confirmation that his future lay elsewhere.

Coach Miguel Cardoso later underlined that point, revealing that Maseko had already made it clear he wanted a fresh start and had expressed his desire to leave.

Cyprus closed, Copenhagen calling

A return to AEL Limassol was never really on the cards. The public broadcaster recently reported that Maseko was not keen on going back to Cyprus after payment issues dogged the final months of his stay there. That door closed quickly.

Copenhagen’s decision to buy him outright changes the picture completely. Instead of a short-term fix, Maseko now steps into a stable European environment at a club that consistently chases honours at home and targets regular involvement on the continental stage.

The move also plugs him into a powerful piece of South African football history. He will follow the path once carved out by Sibusiso Zuma, the Bafana legend who became a cult figure in Denmark with Copenhagen, making 188 appearances and scoring 53 goals after joining them in 2000.

Now it’s Maseko’s turn to test himself in the same colours, in the same city, with Europe watching to see whether his World Cup spark can ignite a full-blown career in the north.
