Sunderland vs Fulham: Black Cats Seek Season Reset

Sunderland step out at the Stadium of Light on Sunday chasing something simple but vital: a reset. A bruising 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town on opening day has left Regis Le Bris’ side playing catch-up already in their Premier League return, and Fulham arrive as the first visitors of the campaign on matchday two.

The performance at Portman Road wasn’t all doom. Sunderland carried a threat, moved the ball with intent and saw Nilson Angulo drag them level. For long stretches, they looked capable of leaving with a result. Then the old sins returned. Loose defending late on, lapses in concentration, and the points slipped away.

That sting cut deeper because it followed a confident pre-season. Wins over Stade Rennais and RC Lens had injected belief and suggested Sunderland were ahead of schedule in their preparations. Now they have to prove those summer signs weren’t a mirage.

Injuries, suspensions and a reshaped Sunderland

Le Bris goes into the Fulham clash juggling absences and new options.

The biggest blow is out wide. Simon Adingra, a key figure on the left, is ruled out for around six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season. His direct running and one‑v‑one threat will be hard to replicate, and Sunderland must find another route to stretch defences.

New summer recruit Dayann Methalie is also unavailable. The defender serves a one‑match suspension carried over from last season in France after yellow-card accumulation, delaying his Premier League bow.

There is at least one new face ready to step into the frame. Jules Ahoka has completed his move from Royal Antwerp and is fully registered, with Le Bris expected to name him in the matchday squad. The plan is cautious: involvement from the bench rather than an immediate start, but his presence gives Sunderland another option as the game wears on.

At the back, the manager finally has some relief. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off the fitness issues that disrupted their pre-season and are back in contention. Both are pressing for starts alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava, giving Le Bris the chance to tighten up a defence that wobbled under pressure at Ipswich.

How Sunderland could line up

With those factors in mind, Sunderland are expected to stick with a bold, front-foot structure.

Predicted XI: Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey.

It’s a side built to press high and play, not simply survive. Xhaka’s presence in midfield offers bite and control, while Le Fee and Angulo will be asked to supply Brian Brobbey and make up for Adingra’s absence in the final third.

The question is simple: can this group turn promising patterns into points?

Kick-off time and how to watch

Sunderland vs Fulham kicks off at 2pm BST on Sunday, 30 August, at the Stadium of Light.

The match will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports+.

Now comes the real test for Le Bris and his players: does that pre-season promise resurface under the home lights, or does the pressure of a slow start begin to bite?
