Southend United Sign Ryan Battrum on Loan for Promotion Push

Southend United have moved to bolster their promotion push with the loan signing of West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month-long deal.

The 21-year-old, who is equally comfortable stepping into midfield, knows Roots Hall well enough already. He lined up against Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July, a run-out that clearly left its mark.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."

For a player trying to break through from a Premier League set-up, the move offers something priceless: real games, real pressure, real noise.

Dyer adds depth – and a duel at right-back

Kieron Dyer’s side have started fast. One defeat in seven has Southend sitting fifth in the early National League table, with momentum and expectation beginning to build.

Dyer wants that backed up by competition everywhere. Battrum arrives not as a stop-gap, but as a direct challenger.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," Dyer said. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."

That last point matters. Southend’s full-backs are asked to step inside, join the midfield, and help dictate play. Battrum’s ability to do that, while still offering the raw athleticism of a modern defender, makes him a natural fit for Dyer’s blueprint.

He will not have to wait long to be thrown into it, either. The West Ham loanee is available for Tuesday night’s home clash with Tamworth, where a big National League crowd will expect to see exactly why Southend moved so quickly to bring him in.
