Santiago Bueno Joins Club América on Loan

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves stint is on pause – and he’s heading for the top of Mexico.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back has joined Club América on loan until the end of the season, with the Mexican giants holding an option to buy. América currently sit top of the Liga MX table, offering the Uruguay international an immediate shot at silverware and high-pressure football.

Bueno, 27, arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year deal. Across three seasons he clocked up 70 Premier League appearances, growing into a regular presence in the Wolves back line.

His standout moment came last September, when he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. He went on to feature 29 times in the league last term, a campaign that ended in disappointment as Wolves were relegated to the Championship after eight consecutive years in the top flight.

This season, he never got going. Bueno did not make an appearance before the window closed, squeezed out as the club finalised their 25-man squad.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website. He explained that Wolves had monitored remaining open markets after the English deadline and, once the numbers were set, “it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

For Wolves, it’s a tough call in a crowded squad. For Bueno, it’s a fresh start at one of the biggest clubs in the Americas – and a chance to turn a setback in England into a statement season in Mexico.
