Rodri Wants Alvarez at Barcelona

Rodri has barely unpacked his bags in Barcelona, but he already knows exactly who he wants alongside him at Camp Nou: Alvarez.

The Spain international, fresh from his move from Manchester to Catalonia, has been unabashed in his admiration for his former team-mate, openly pushing the idea of a reunion in Blaugrana colours. He’s seen the Argentine up close, felt the weight of his goals and his work-rate, and he’s convinced Alvarez would be a perfect fit for Barca’s next attacking evolution.

Alvarez spent the summer at the centre of a tug-of-war among Europe’s elite. Barcelona and Real Madrid both circled, sensing an opportunity to prise away one of La Liga’s most dangerous forwards. Atletico, though, dug in. Letting their star attacker walk to a direct rival was never on the agenda. Arsenal also explored the possibility of bringing him back to the Premier League, but reports in Spain insist Alvarez had no interest in retracing his steps to England.

Rodri knows exactly why so many clubs tried.

He shared a dressing room and a pitch with Alvarez for two highly successful seasons in the Premier League, a spell that gave him a clear view of the 26-year-old’s ceiling. Asked by Mundo Deportivo whether he would like to see Barcelona move for the Argentine, Rodri didn’t bother to play it down.

“Would I sign him here? Of course,” he said. “I think he is a sensational player. I would take him here without hesitation. I had the chance to play with him for two years, and I think he is an incredible player, truly incredible.”

The praise did not stop at goals and highlights. Rodri zeroed in on Alvarez’s brain as much as his finishing. Once a classic No 9, Alvarez has steadily morphed into one of the most tactically flexible forwards in Europe, sliding between roles without losing his edge.

“He has almost played more often as a number 10 than as a number 9, even though he initially came from a number 9 position,” Rodri explained. “But he has also adapted to a role where he can play as an attacking midfielder, a playmaker, and he has even played matches as a central midfielder. He is truly a spectacular player.”

That versatility is exactly what top clubs crave. A forward who can press from the front, drop into pockets, link play, and still threaten the box is a rare commodity. For a team like Barcelona, constantly searching for new attacking solutions and juggling financial constraints with sporting ambition, a player who can cover multiple roles at an elite level is gold.

For now, though, Alvarez is still Atletico’s man.

The World Cup winner has already featured twice in La Liga this season and remains central to Diego Simeone’s plans. Atletico are eyeing a serious title push, and Simeone will lean heavily on Alvarez’s firepower and tactical discipline to keep them in the fight with Madrid and Barca.

Yet Rodri’s endorsement will not go unnoticed. When a newly arrived cornerstone of Barcelona’s midfield publicly identifies a former colleague as “sensational” and “spectacular”, it adds fresh oxygen to rumours that never really went away over the summer.

Barcelona continue to scan the market for their next big attacking signing. If Alvarez keeps driving Atletico’s ambitions and maintains his upward curve, the question will not be whether he suits Camp Nou, but whether Barca can find a way to pry him away from a direct rival.
