Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a clear line under his day‑to‑day involvement at St Mary’s while keeping his stake in the club.

The 42-year-old, a central figure in the Sport Republic project, will remain a co-owner of the Championship side but no longer sit on the board. It marks the end of a formal chapter that had already begun to fade into the background.

His influence at Southampton has gradually reduced in recent seasons. Ankersen has been serving as president of Turkish club Goztepe, another team under the Sport Republic umbrella, and that role has increasingly demanded his attention. Even with that shift, he stayed plugged into Southampton’s recruitment operation, helping to shape squads through a period of relegation and attempted reset.

Ankersen’s reputation was forged at Brentford, where he worked between 2015 and 2021. That spell coincided with the club’s rise from Championship contenders to Premier League newcomers, a climb built on data-led decision-making and smart talent identification. It was that track record that helped convince Sport Republic to bring him into their multi-club model.

Sport Republic itself is controlled by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in Southampton. The group has expanded its reach across Europe, owning a majority share in French side Valenciennes as well as Goztepe, who currently sit bottom of the Turkish Super Lig.

Ankersen now steps back from the front line at St Mary’s as Southampton continue to chase a return to the Premier League under a structure he helped design. The question is how that model evolves without one of its original architects in the boardroom.
