Raphinha Transforms Barcelona into an Unstoppable Force

Hansi Flick tried to reshape Barcelona’s attack in the summer. One big move didn’t happen. Another has changed everything.

After the club failed in an attempt to prise Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid, the German coach ripped up the script and pushed Raphinha inside. No longer the touchline winger from his Leeds United days, the Brazilian has been recast as Barcelona’s central striker in the post-Robert Lewandowski, post-Ferran Torres era.

Five games in, it looks like a masterstroke.

‘On another level’

Speaking before Sunday’s trip to Levante, Flick didn’t bother hiding his excitement about the 29-year-old’s transformation.

“Rapha has played fantastic. He is on another level – he’s unbelievable,” Flick said. “When he’s like this, he’s, for me, one of the best players in the world.”

The numbers back him up. Barcelona have opened the LaLiga campaign with four straight wins and added a midweek Champions League victory, with Raphinha at the heart of it all. He has exploded in his new role, scoring eight goals in five matches and giving Barça a ruthless edge they often lacked last season.

He is not doing it alone. With Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi flanking him, Barcelona’s front line suddenly looks like one of the most intimidating in Europe: pace, width, pressing, and a centre-forward who can both finish and link play.

The pressure on defences has been relentless. The goals have followed.

A squad built on flexibility

Flick, though, is determined not to let the story become just “Raphinha or nothing”. He made a point of stressing the variety at his disposal through the middle.

“Raphinha, Gabby and Hamza are three different profiles, but there are other ways we could play,” he said. “Anthony and Karim can also play in this position. Or Dani Olmo. Dani has showed us in last two years he can play there – the same with Fermin Lopez. We have a lot of options.”

That flexibility matters. It allows Barcelona to tweak their shape without ripping out the system, to press higher or drop off, to play on the break or dominate the ball. It also means Raphinha’s reinvention is a choice, not a necessity.

For now, though, it is impossible to ignore that he has become the reference point of a team sitting two points clear of Alavés and three ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the table.

Defence sets the platform

All the noise surrounds the attack, but Flick’s Barcelona are not just a highlight reel. Quietly, the back line has hardened.

They have conceded only three goals so far this season. That platform has allowed the front three to play with freedom, safe in the knowledge the structure behind them is holding.

Flick came armed with data to underline the change.

“When I see the xG we have in every game, it’s good, but also the xG against us is much better than last season. It helps us a lot,” he explained.

At the centre of that improvement stands Pau Cubarsí. The teenage defender has become a fixture in Flick’s defence, and the coach was emphatic in his praise.

“For me, after the World Cup, [Cubarsi] played fantastic. For me, he’s playing on another level at the moment,” Flick said. “I am really happy he has the confidence, but also he’s very focused. With the body, he also improved physically. This is very important, especially for this position. Also with the ball, he’s playing really good, which helps us a lot, so amazing about that.”

Cubarsí’s blend of composure, timing and improved physicality has given Barcelona a calm presence at the back. It is no coincidence that the team’s expected goals against has dropped while the attack has taken off.

Full strength for Levante

Barcelona head to Levante on Sunday defending a perfect league record and a fragile early lead in the title race. The mood is good. So is the squad news.

Flick confirmed there are no new injury problems after their European exertions. The only absentees remain long-term casualties Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji, leaving the rest of the core intact for another test of their early-season authority.

Raphinha will lead the line again, Levante will try to find a way to stop him, and Barcelona will look to prove that this is not just a hot streak, but the shape of a new era under Flick.
