Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals End of ÖFB Era

The power struggle at the Austrian Football Association is reaching its climax. According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, Peter Schöttel’s future is expected to be settled on Friday, when the federation’s supervisory body meets to decide whether his nine-year spell is over.

The outcome already feels heavily signposted. Schöttel has effectively been sidelined, and his working relationship with head coach Ralf Rangnick is being described in Austria as shattered beyond repair.

Broken trust at the top

The split is no longer a rumour whispered in corridors. Former international striker and current Sky pundit Marc Janko has openly confirmed the mood in the ÖFB camp.

“If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” Janko said of the looming decision.

For months, the fracture between the sporting director and the German coach has deepened. Janko painted a clear picture: with Schöttel and Rangnick, “it did not really work properly”. He added that, on key issues, Rangnick has long since stopped going through Schöttel and instead works “via other people”.

Once that chain of command breaks, a sporting director’s position rarely survives.

A successful spell heading for the exit

Schöttel’s departure would close a chapter that, on the pitch at least, reads like one of the most successful in modern ÖFB history.

The 59-year-old arrived at the federation in 2017, initially as U19 coach. Within two months he had been promoted to overall sporting director, taking charge of the broader sporting direction.

Results followed.

Austria qualified for back-to-back European Championships. At both Euro 2021 and Euro 2024, the national team reached the last 16, a level of consistency the country had long craved.

The biggest landmark came last summer: Austria returned to a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years. Their run ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the breakthrough itself marked a major step for the federation and for Schöttel’s tenure.

Now that era stands on the brink, not because of results, but because the two most powerful sporting voices in the setup can no longer work together.

The favourite to replace Schöttel

Attention inside the ÖFB has already shifted to the question of succession. No official decision has been announced, yet Krone reports that one internal candidate is moving to the front of the queue: Sebastian Prödl.

The former Werder Bremen defender has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024 and is said to be highly regarded for his work in that role. His name keeps surfacing in internal discussions.

One factor could prove decisive. Unlike Schöttel, Prödl is believed to enjoy an “exceptionally good” relationship with Rangnick.

In a federation where the sporting director and national coach must pull in the same direction, that might be the detail that shapes Austria’s next footballing chapter.
