Rafael Leao Addresses Transfer Speculation

Rafael Leao has had enough.

With his name ricocheting around the transfer market and rumours swirling about a move away from San Siro, the Portugal international went public on Thursday to shut the door on what he called “speculation and stories that aren’t true.”

The 27-year-old chose his own platform and his own words. On Instagram, alongside a photo of him working in training with Milan, Leao drew a hard line between what he controls and the noise around him.

“My only thought is on the field: I am concentrated on giving my best, every single game and every single training session,” he wrote. Then came the real message, aimed squarely at the market chatter: “Just to avoid any form of speculation and stories that aren’t true, I repeat that for some time I’ve assigned all my interests exclusively to my family and my lawyers. Nobody else is authorised to speak for me. My mind is on the next objectives.”

Leao pushes back as Turkey calls

The timing is no coincidence. Galatasaray have been heavily linked with a move for the former Lille winger, with his name repeatedly tied to a high-profile switch to Istanbul. Fenerbahce and Besiktas have also been mentioned as admirers, turning the Turkish Super Lig into one of the most concrete avenues if he does leave Milan.

Leao himself had opened the door slightly at the end of last season, hinting that his cycle in Milan might be nearing its natural end and that a “fresh challenge” could appeal. Yet a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues has not materialised, and that vacuum has been quickly filled by rumour, intermediaries and opportunistic brokers.

His post reads like a direct response to that world. By explicitly naming only his family and his lawyers as authorised to handle his affairs, Leao is distancing himself from any agents or middlemen who may be offering him around to clubs such as Galatasaray without his consent.

Milan’s stance: big fee or nothing

On the club’s side, Milan are in no rush. Leao is under contract until June 2028, a long-term deal that gives the Rossoneri serious leverage in any negotiation. They do not need to sell, and they are acting like it.

Reports in Italy indicate that Galatasaray have already tested the waters with an opening bid in the region of €35 million. Milan’s answer was blunt: no. The club are said to be holding out for a package of at least €60 million, bonuses included, before they even consider sanctioning a sale of one of their headline attackers.

There is another layer of tension here. Milan have not moved to extend or rework Leao’s current deal, but they are also not putting him on the market. The result is a delicate balance: a player who has previously talked about a new challenge, and a club that will listen only if the price is right.

A month for nerves and manoeuvres

All of that sets up a volatile August. Leao wants the conversation to return to what he does with the ball at his feet. Milan want their valuation respected. Turkish clubs sense an opening in a market where elite sides in England, Spain, Germany and France have so far stayed on the sidelines.

The contract to 2028 gives Milan time. It does not guarantee calm.

If no club steps up to meet that €60 million threshold, Leao will stay where he is, still central to Milan’s plans and still under the same spotlight he is now trying to dim. If someone does, the question becomes sharper: will Milan cash in on a player who once hinted his journey there was nearing its end, or will they dig in and bet that this storm is just another summer squall?
