When Does the Premier League Resume?

The 2026/27 Premier League season kicked off with plenty of excitement and surprises. Yet, fans must wait two weeks before the next round of matches because of a longer international break this September and October.

Several big-name teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham have underperformed in the opening five games. Even reigning champions Arsenal stumbled just before the pause. The only club maintaining a flawless record so far is Manchester City.

Return Date for Premier League Matches

Matches will kick off again on Saturday, October 10, offering a full weekend schedule after players return from international duty. This break is longer than usual, lasting four games worth of international fixtures.

Reason Behind the Lengthy International Break

This year, the FIFA calendar merged what used to be two separate breaks in September and October into one extended period. That’s because the 2026 World Cup expanded to 48 teams and lasted six weeks during the summer. FIFA wanted to give players more time to recover and settle back with their clubs.

The break allows national teams two full weeks for training camps across both months, during which they will play four international games. This extended period gives national coaches a rare chance to spend significant time with their squads.

Next International Break

After this combined September/October break, the next window for international matches will be in November 2026. From November 9 to November 17, national teams worldwide will meet again for up to two games, returning to the usual structure.
