Portsmouth Sign Defender Benjamin Arthur on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan signing of defender Benjamin Arthur from Premier League side Brentford.

The 20-year-old centre-back arrives at Fratton Park with a taste of top-flight football already on his CV. He spent part of last season in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, making six appearances, and has three senior outings under his belt for the Bees.

Arthur is also regarded as one of England’s promising young defenders, having been capped at youth level up to the Under-20s.

Head Coach Comments

"We're thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks," he said. "He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.

"Despite his relatively young age, he already has experience of top-flight football, and we feel he can be a real asset as we look to progress in our third season in the Championship."

Portsmouth wanted extra depth and mobility at the heart of their defence. Arthur now gets the chance to turn potential into presence in a side with clear ambitions to climb.
