Portsmouth's Colby Bishop Rescues Draw Against Blackburn

Colby Bishop ended his drought with a rare goal to rescue Portsmouth a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers in a lively Championship clash at Fratton Park.

It was a night that started at full throttle and never really eased off.

Lightning start at Fratton

Blackburn fired the first warning shot after just 22 seconds, Todd Cantwell forcing Daniel Bielica into action and jolting the home crowd into life.

Portsmouth’s response was ruthless.

With less than three-and-a-half minutes gone, Jayden Meghoma swung in a cross from the left. Sean McLoughlin’s header clear only went as far as Zak Swanson on the edge of the box. The full-back watched the bouncing ball, set himself, and guided a crisp volley past an unsighted Balazs Toth to give Pompey the lead.

Fratton Park roared. The advantage barely had time to settle.

Seven minutes later, Harry Pickering slid a pass into Oladapo Afolayan on the left corner of the area. The former St Pauli forward rolled past Marlon Pack and drove a low right-footed strike towards the near post. Bielica couldn’t keep it out, and Blackburn were level in what had already become an open, stretched contest.

Blackburn seize on Bielica error

The chances kept coming. Chelsea loanee Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, impressive throughout, nearly punished Toth four minutes before the break. The 17-year-old snapped onto a loose pass out from the Blackburn keeper and thundered a left-footed effort at goal, only for Toth to recover and get a strong hand to it.

Portsmouth came out after half-time on the front foot. Kavuma-McQueen again tested Toth in the 54th minute, his shot beaten away before Pack’s follow-up was deflected wide. The momentum felt blue.

Then it flipped.

On 57 minutes, Bielica miscued a clearance straight into trouble. Kristi Montgomery intercepted and worked it to Ryoya Morishita on the right side of the box. The Japan international took aim and drilled a right-footed finish across goal into the bottom left corner. From nowhere, Blackburn led.

Bishop breaks the spell

For Bishop, this season has been a grind. Just three goals in a year, dropped to the bench, his last strike dating back to April. He came on with a point to prove. He left with one.

Portsmouth refused to fold after Morishita’s goal and kept feeding Kavuma-McQueen. The teenager again made the difference. Picking up the ball on the right of the area, he spun away from his marker and unleashed a powerful drive. Bishop had gambled, attacking the space, and the ball glanced off his head on its way in.

Toth was beaten. Bishop finally had his goal. Fratton Park knew how much it meant.

Late push, shared points

Pompey sensed there was still more in the game. In stoppage time, Meghoma almost snatched it, surging into space and firing on goal, but Toth stood firm once more to preserve the point for Blackburn.

When the whistle went, the table told its own story. Blackburn sit 16th on nine points, Portsmouth one place and one point back in 18th, with a game in hand.

On a night of errors, comebacks and a long-awaited goal, both sides walked away knowing this could easily have been three points instead of one.
