Philippe Coutinho Returns to Football with Santos

Philippe Coutinho is back in football – and back in Brazil – after signing a short-term deal with Santos that runs until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old playmaker, once the dazzling heartbeat of Liverpool and a marquee arrival at Barcelona, had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. Mentally drained, he chose to step away from the game earlier this year, openly citing exhaustion and the need to prioritise his wellbeing.

Now he returns wearing the No. 11 shirt and walking into a dressing room that already contains one of the most influential figures in his life: Neymar.

Neymar’s messages that wouldn’t stop

Coutinho didn’t hide how decisive Neymar was in dragging him back onto the pitch. Speaking at his unveiling, he laid out the timeline with disarming honesty.

"Neymar certainly played a very important role in my coming here," Coutinho said, as quoted by ESPN. "He's a player who needs no introduction, a friend I've had since childhood, and I think he was the first person in football to send me a message when I left Vasco."

The first approach came almost immediately after his departure.

"The next day he had already sent me a message, but at that moment I said: 'Look Ney, it would be a pleasure to play with you, but I'm not feeling well right now, it's not possible' and it really didn't make sense to me."

Coutinho was still deep in the decision to step away. Professional football, with its relentless demands, felt distant. Returning simply wasn’t on the table.

"Months later he contacted me again, but my answer was the same," he continued. The door stayed shut. Neymar kept knocking.

Then came the turning point.

"Then two weeks ago he sent me another message," Coutinho added. "Then I stopped, reconsidered. I wanted to go back to playing football and I thought: 'Why not?' I'm going to a big club, in another city."

The persistence finally met a different mindset. The idea of starting again, of testing himself at a Brazilian giant like Santos, began to feel less like a burden and more like an opportunity.

A fresh start at a giant

Coutinho described the move as a matter of fairness to himself as much as anything else.

"It would be unfair to me not being able to go back to work and not being able to go back to playing football. I wanted to thank the president, Mattos and Ney. I'm happy to accept this challenge."

For Santos, it is a calculated gamble on a player who has seen the very top of the European game and is now searching for joy and rhythm again. For Coutinho, it is something more personal: a reset, a reunion with a childhood friend, and a chance to prove there is still a spark left in that famous right foot.
